Getting Squirrelly Ready For Bed....
It is an art getting this animal to calm down, and we have a process of things that we go through to make this happen. It really is adorable the things that she does when she is sleepy, and I must say that this time of my day with her is my favourite. If there is any moment that instills her desire for human contact and proves her happiness in domestication, this is it. Please enjoy these photos, as I have seen no others like it in my search for information on domesticated squirrels!
She has picked her spot and is now looking for me to help her nest.
Watch squirrelly prepare for bed up in Aedan's closet......
She knows I'm coming to help her get ready for bed and gets into position to start cleaning and receiving her bedtime lovin'.
The cleaning begins, and first, it is my turn. She loves to clean her momma. There have been times where she has attempted to clean my entire arm. But, not tonight.
She likes to clean my nose, which I don't really enjoy. She usually tries to clean my nostrils, and I cannot bare that sensation, but for right now, she just wants to clean the tip of my nose;0)
It is time to clean my forehead. Sometimes she even gets up on top of my head and attempts to clean my entire scalp. Maybe she is finding bugs - ew! Just kidding!
Time to clean herself, and you can see, she is starting already to get a little sleepy. It doesn't get cuter than that!
She's really strating to give into the lovin' as she starts to roll over into a cleaning, sleepy trance.
It's only getting worse. I'm starting to push her back into the nest, so that I may step down from the stool I am standing on to pet her up in the closet! It isn't easy standing on this stoll, petting her with one hand and taking pictures with the other.
Look at my sleepy baby. She loves me and loves to clean me. It takes a while to get her to fall asleep, but it sure is fun doing it!
Oh, look! She is finally climbing into her blankets! This is her domesticated version of a nest.
She's in but not quite ready to give up on the cleaning. She can do this for hours. Squirrels are suprisingly very clean animals. She is not stinky like most rodents.
All right! The cleaning is coming to an end, and now, she is chewing on a shirt, accepting my lovin' without having to return the favour. I have watched her sleep before, and she actually chews on things while she is asleep. Her ferret tunnel that she sleeps in when she is in her cage, has chew holes in it from her doing the same thing.
Night-night, Squirrelly! She will sleep throughtout the night without climbing out of the closet. She does fidget in her sleep, just like we do. She will actually stay asleep longer if I leave her in the closet, rather than putting her in the cage.
I hope you have enjoyed the Squirrelly adventures in sleeping. She really is special to me, and I take great care of her and her squirrelly needs!
