Monday was a real fun-filled day. We started off with finishing all of masechet Bietza, except for the last three lines which we had to save for the siyum. Then we had a cool shiur with the sorta-Rabbi of Pelech Jerusalem (hehe, the girls from there hate it when I call it that) who talked about what Chanuka is about based on the first two Machabim books: Makabim alef (written by an Eretz Israeli Jew who was there at the time) - it's all about the national victory and about finally having a autonomic Jewish state after so many years of occupation. This version doesn't mention nes pach hashemen at all, just the victories in battle. Or Makabim bet (written by a Jew residing in Egypt at the time of the rebellion) - all about the religious aspect of the chag - having religious autonomy, kind of like some Charedim nowadays who live in Israel; "we don't care who rules over us just let us be Jews the way we want to". There are another two Makabim books but they aren't published yet by that same publishing house. I think I know what I want to ask for for me Channuka present.
Then the daf yomi girls drove to HaRav Shuki's house (he has such a sweet dog!) for a barbcue siyum - where we finished the last aforementioned lines of Gmara, said Kaddish (I said it!) and, as is custom, we started the first mishna of what we would be learning next. In our case, Megila. It was a little strange this morning to be talking about what dates you read megila when almost all the other classes are talking about one aspect or another of Channuka, but I expect that in a week or so we'll get over that.
I finished my first Hebrew book ever! That is, one that wasn't translated from English that I had read already. Mishu Larutz Ito! Such a good book! It's goodfor the soul... Now I have to see the movie. And read more in Hebrew, of course.
Today a pile of girls went to a bookstore in town for the first sale and grand opening of a book one of our Rabanim wrote called Wrestling Jacob about phsychology and freudian slips around Jacob. I really want to get it! Not only does it look fantastic, mostly because I love his class and teaching style as it is, but some of the chapters in the book are things we learned in class and I stoppedwritting proper notes a long time ago... So this would be great! Plus, I would get it in his words which guarantees I'd get all the material and in the way it's supposed to be presented. So, I need to get it. And I need to get him to sign it. *evil plan laugh*
