You may or may not have bumped into news media yesterday. If you did, you likely heard of this new fangled thing announced by Microsoft called "Surface".
http://www.surface.com Well, I'm happy to report that this is the product I have worked on for the last 2 years. It's awesome to be able to say, "I can't talk about what I work on" for about... 3 months. At somewhere near the year mark of not talking about it, when you work on what is 100% the coolest thing coming out of Microsoft this year, probably the coolest thing coming out of Microsoft in the last 5 years, and arguably the coolest thing Microsoft has ever shipped, it's really hard. I can't imagine how my boss feels after 3.5 years, and the software architect at who knows how many years.
Well, all that is finally over. This is the first thing I've ever worked on that I've come to work every day, and felt like I was changing the world. I'm going to try and avoid too much corny, and leave that to the marketing guys, but this is new. This is the first GUI new. This is the first "home" computer level of new. This is big. I respect that some people won't get it. And I respect that it may be a financial flop (we hope it won't be... ;) ). The first GUI wasn't Windows, the first home computer wasn't the PC, but they were still important steps. They still set the stage.
Yeah, we aren't the first people to have played in this space, similar types of technology have floated around in research labs since the 80s. But we are the first to bring a product to market in a way that anyone can get their hands on it (Much like Plasma TVs, your first sighting will probably be a venue like a Las Vegas Hotel, Trendy Bar, whatever.) Anyway, I guess I'm getting corny so I'm going to stop and give some links. In 10 years, tell me this wasn't industry changing...
