I'm still a beginner gym rat, but having an interest in exercise physiology, I have a question that I think fits here:

What mechanism(s) allow the beginner to both gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, but prevents more advanced lifters from doing both at the same time? Is this question even being researched?

We need a name for this phenomenon so I can look it up on PubMed. I have no idea what to use for my search terms.

Any help is appreciated.
