Hey heinousbitca and digitalemur: the Advocate has a nice little Letter to the Editor form. I'm thinking I'll use it.

What has the Advocate been doing dumb lately? (I don't receive it or sit in waiting rooms that would carry it, so I'm out of the loop.)

This week's cover is "GAY IS THE NEW BLACK" in Impact Huge, subtitled "The Last Great Civil Rights Struggle."

um guise? i think you missed a few significant civil rights struggles.

... Yeah, just a few. Wow. Way to make it all about you, mainstream gay Advocate editors.

I'm curious, because I don't quite understand: is the objection to the article itself, or just the way the cover/title was presented?

I just read it, and in particular the last two paragraphs make me ask this.

(I'm not trying to be snarky; I genuinely am not sure what you mean.)

The way the cover and title are presented. As invested as I am in this particular flavor of equality, I have a huge problem with the implication that this is the only unsolved civil rights issue.

I cannot speak for them, of course, but this was my reaction: I've just gone and read the article and enjoyed it immensely.

Its nuance was completely lost in the splashy cover that suggested that gays are the only group left with a civil rights problem.

Ah yes. Marketing in all its lovely forms.

"Nuance doesn't sell..."

I still need to read it, and I'm not saying it has no merit because the cover sucks. It just severely mistreats it in a way which is irresponsible for a group that kind of needs better PR right now.

Yeah, I don't think it's politic for gays to claim to the mantel of the civil rights movement. I'm confused as to how true it is (by percentage of real folks who actually have those feelings), but the story/mythology of historically oppressed minorities finding this offensive is a strong one in the current media.

I wrote a brief rant about it earlier today if you want to follow my username to it. I was only reacting to the headline-- I haven't been able to sit down and read the article yet. I hear the comments on the article are quite lively.
