Someone, I think Robert Fulghum, pointed out that a house's lawn is less a part of the owner's property than a peace offering to one's neighbors. Distance from the street - the bigger the better - and evidence of the means and inclination to maintain it.

The hair on your head is like the lawn of your house (let's pretend, since I haven't lived in such a house in at least five years.) It is as much social offering as personal expression. There's the same distance from the street, the assurance to your neighbors that you take care of your property, the promise that nothing is amiss.

I always said I liked rock gardens better anyway.
