I may have killed some of the planaria with an experimental food source... aaaagh :(
Lesson: do not feed them mysterious live grubs you find somewhere. I got to work this morning and found hundreds of shreds of the pupa casing, no more grub, and a lot of planaria corpses. The ones who survived look kind of grouchy.
