the global economy vs. your friendly local hobbyist

Grrrrf. I knew people in the jewelry world were complaining that prices were going up, but now that I'm paying attention, now the sticker shock is setting in...

so to speak...

Last time I looked in preparation to buy some, about 2 years ago, silver's spot price was $7.13 per troy ounce. Gold was about $400.

Today, I looked at Monsterslayer. $20.21 for silver, $988.50 for gold.

I know solarbird's been reporting live on metal futures, and the dollar is being driven into the freakin' ground, and I have no actual basis for being surprised by any of this, but it is giving me a little fright about ordering some metal for to play with.

I wonder frequently about "peak gold" and "peak silver", pretty much every time I see some random ugly tchotchke rendered in "pure sterling silver" or a film of gold in electronics, but I know very little about the issue. Talk about nonrenewable resources?

wtf, frustrations, metalwork
