you want me to do what with who where?

I was wondering how I'd get the sleeves of the Big Damn Sweater to match gradients, and then gipsieee showed me this sweater (you really should look at it, it made me happy just to see it) and I saw that the neck was done by steeking. I read the Knitty article on this technique when it came out, but didn't quite understand it at the time. Apparently it is ( Read more... )

I don't know what yarn you're using, but the stripes on the sleeves would end up half as narrow as the stripes on the body, unless you changed the body pattern to be knit in the round.

Noro Big Kureyon. It has a long gradient but you're probably still right.

Although... I am guessing that 2 sleeve widths, knitted side-by-side as a flat piece, would be approximately as wide as either of the body pieces... making it not an issue. I mean, it has HUGE sleeves.

OK, well, on the noro sweater I knit (which has HUGE sleeves) the sleeves have merely 10 sts less than the body. I'd take a good look at your pattern and do some math with this issue in mind. :) (Besides, I matches the stripes on my sleeves, and while it was a pain, I'm not sure it was more of a pain than steeking.)

'With this issue in mind' - is that to say that you experienced the problem of stripes being too wide, even with such a small difference in width?

I hope not, because there is no way in Hell I am going to remake the sweater in the round. It took me seven cast-ons to make the back, and three to make the front, and I'm half done with the front and have partially ripped it back twice. Variegated yarns and obsessive-compulsive crazy Virgo knitters are not the best mix of the 80s and 90s.

"with this issue in mine"... the stripes are BARELY wider than those on the body. But, the stripes are never the same length in each ball of Noro anyways, so it hardly matters. :)

Anyways See the photo of the sweater.

(BTW, there may have been less than a 10 stitch difference, but I don't have the pattern any longer, April does.)
