Armed with the new "panic button" feature on her PCD and the sharpest kitchen knife tucked carefully into her gathering basket, Juliet had bundled up against the cold and decided today was the day she was going to face her fears and venture to the indoor marketplace on her own again. It had been months, and with winter approaching, she'd be a fool to let the memory of bad things keep her from gathering things she needed. Like more needles for her sewing, and more thread, if she could find it. She would keep to the areas with the strange lights, and keep a sharp eye out for any other people.

As she approached the marketplace, she caught sight of an unfamiliar person. Her grip tightened on her PCD, but she still managed a smile. He did not seem hostile, despite the sword at his waist.

Despite the fact that he had fed well too well, the Hunger was always aware of life, of prey, around him and the young woman walking nearby was no exception. He would have walked on by without a word, but she'd caught his eye and smiled.

He smiled back, curtly. "Hello, darling," he drawled as he neared.

"Good day to you, good sir," she replied, stopping to curtsy as he came up to her. She was not certain that she liked being referred to by an endearment when they had not met before, but she would be polite. Perhaps the gentleman spoke this way as a habit.

"I am Juliet Montague. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

He smiled at that, and returned her curtsy with a flourish and a bow. "The pleasure's all mine, Lady Montague," he answered, slipping seamlessly behind the courtier mask, though he made no move to reach for her hand. "Thomas Raith, at your service."

The proper manners put her more at ease, but not quite enough to allow him familiarity just yet, despite her dislike of being called by her married name - it still did not feel quite right to her.

"Lord Raith," she acknowledged with a polite nod. "What brings you out on such a cold day? Had you something in particular you were looking for at the marketplace?"

At the title, Thomas froze, and a look of deep disgust flitted over his face and was gone. "Just Thomas, lady," he replied with a studied smile. "Lord Raith would be my lord father."

The words 'the sadistic bastard' went unsaid.

"And nothing that would interest a lady. I was merely hoping to see what this place has to offer when it comes to arms."

"As you like, Thomas," she replied. The strong reaction was like to her own, although she had a feeling it was for different reasons. "But if I am to do so, I would ask that you call me Juliet. Lady Montague is my husband's mother."

But at the dismissal of interest, she bristled. "Why would you think such things would not be of interest, Thomas? In a city such as this, it would be foolish to go about unarmed." She'd learned that lesson the hard way.

He shrugged fluidly, her irritation seeming to roll off his back like water. "Because my sisters taught me never speak of weaponry in polite society," he replied. No, weapons were rarely spoken of when he was growing up. The knife always came at his back, after all.

Thomas gave Juliet another little bow. This one more obviously amused, the gesture just a little too perfect to be sincere. "My apologies if I have offended, sweetheart."

First darling, and now sweetheart. He was mocking. A Mercutio, then. One who would seek to rile her temper. Well, living with Tybalt had taught her much about dealing with such, and she would make use of it. She allows a hint of mockery into her voice when she replies. "And your good sisters neglected to teach you that one does use endearments to refer to a lady one has just met? I am sorry."

Her words made Thomas laugh, the sound low and rich, and he ran a hand through his hair, utterly at ease and unconcerned with the cold. "Call it the prerogative of the baby brother," he answered, amused. "To ignore what my sisters tell me except when it benefits myself."

"I pity your sisters, then." But she smiled as she said it. He seemed in good enough humor, even if he did act a rake. "You are as bad as some of my cousins. Had you no one older and wiser to make you pay attention at lessons?"

There was something comforting in the formalities, in the play of words and forms that were older than he was. It reminded him of the White Court, reminded him of just how inhuman he really was. Cold comfort, but it was better than none.

"None as charming as the one in front of me."

That made her laugh. And blush slightly. "I, older and wiser? I will allow for the wiser, but truly, sir, I doubt I am older. Unless you have matured quickly for a boy. You must at least by my cousin Tybalt's age."

Her teasing faltered the moment she said his name. Her poor Tybalt.

"Just a confirmation that wisdom doesn't come with age," Thomas replied easily. He caught the name Tybalt, and then Juliet's fell into place in his mind. Thomas shrugged and gave her another flourish and a bow. "My apologies if I've said something inappropriate, lady Juliet."

She shook her head. "No, nothing inappropriate. I - I was thinking of my cousin. The Animus stole him from me a week ago this very day. I - it is still odd to think that he is not here, will not be waiting for me when I return from my errands." That he's well and truly dead.

Still, there was no need to burden this gentleman with her melancholy. She forced a smile onto her face. "Had you any luck finding weaponry?"

He nodded at her words, the gesture at once polite and distant. The sort of thing that in a Court gathering would have been enough to convey apology without being caught in the words. He met her smile with one of his own.

"I've seen a lot of things that wished they were weapons. And things that used to be weapons in a former life. But I thank you for the interest."
