Al was dead tired, and hadn't slept at all. He felt he should be by Rachel's side, but the living was always more important... as terrible as it sounded. He'd go as soon as she was awake.

When Negi finally slept, Al had found his brother's arm and spent some time cleaning and polishing it up. It was calming; something he used to do for his own armor.

When he heard Ed come home, he walked out into the kitchen, carrying the heavy steel prosthetic. He set it on the table and without a word, went over to kneel next to Ed, reaching in to begin cleaning out the port with gentle, steady fingers.

Al was there and Ed knew it, but he didn't say hello yet. He was too heavy into his own thoughts, trying to think about something lighter and failing. On this day, they burned their house down. They could never go back to what they had before.

A few days ago, friends -supposedly- left this home. Was it the same thing? Rachel wanted to return, but what about the others? Could Ed feel comfortable having people who didn't trust him back in his home?

A heavy sigh came from Ed as he let Al prepare the port. "She's worried she won't have her voice."

"She hasn't tried singing yet?"

Al's a little surprised. He'd think she'd have at least tried humming a bit.

Alphonse, on the other hand, has faith that Blaine and the others will see sense eventually. It wasn't Negi's fault.

"I guess she's still resting, hm."

"She has some pretty heavy damage there. She should rest." Ed turned to look at Al this time, his face still stoic with the mix of emotions. It was hard to see Rachel like that. And it was even harder to leave. Regardless of the fact that she'd been a 'bratty teenager,' he couldn't switch off his emotions. She may love someone else, but he still cared for her.

"Told her she was gonna sing regardless." Whether it was through her own voice or someone else's, there was no way she would stop.

Al left a hand on Ed's shoulder, arbitrarily to steady himself while he continued with the port.

He couldn't help a smile.

"You always know the right thing to say," he admitted -- which is actually true. Ed had always had a knack for encouraging words.

Ed snorted at that. "It's the truth." It wasn't encouraging, at least in his mind. It was just how it was. Sometimes people needed a push in the right direction to see it.

"How's Negi doing?"

Al picked up Ed's arm, standing and sliding the shoulder into the port. It'll still need to be properly rewired back in, but thankfully knows how to do that by now.

Carefully he settled the clamps in place, making sure everything was properly aligned. He made a few tiny adjustments here and there, then let out his breath.

"Better, since she woke up-

This isn't as good as Winry, but..." Al placed the wrench around the screw in the clamp, taking firm, hold of it.

"Deep breath. On three. One, two, three."

Here comes the pain.

No matter how well he prepared for it, it always catches him off guard. It was almost like being electrocuted while the white hot poker was attempting to dissolve flesh and bone in the process. His body stiffened as his jaw clenched tight. A quiet whine wheezed between his teeth before he could relax.

Only a moment, he could relax, because he had to start moving. Everything always felt like molten fire when the connections first kicked in, and it would probably be another day or so before the 'feedback fuzz,' as he called it, abated. Slowly he started through the diagnostics. Shoulder rotation, elbow flex, wrist, fingers. Everything was done slowly so he could hear and make certain there were no funny catches that may indicate there's a problem.

Al set down the wrench and clamp, reaching up to help rub the muscles out around the port, making sure to get his back. It helped to wake up the nerves, iron out the static of electrical impulses inside Ed's body and help everything to accept everything else.

"Everything working okay?"

When he speaks, Ed's voice is strained. But he can answer honestly as he rests his arm on the table. "Yeah, it feels alright." He turned his face to Al and he finally smiled slightly. "Thanks, Al."

Al smiled back for him, nudging his knuckles against Ed's flesh arm, then touching the chain of his watch.

"How many years has it been now?"

"Eight years now? It was six before I came here." His hand nudged back as his eyes lingered on the watch. "It still feels like it was yesterday, though." Ed looked up, hanging his head off the back of the chair as he looked at the ceiling. "Nothing really feels ..you know, home. Not yet, at least."

"... I was thinking, we should build a house."

It sounded so odd, but it just slipped out. "You and me, and we'll make it big enough for the rest of Solve. We can just find a grassy hill somewhere, near the river, and tuck it back in the trees."

Build from the ground up. Ed grunted, not moving his head as he continued to stare at the ceiling. It was something to do, that was certain. "Alright."

That's all he said on it. Building a house wouldn't be bad. He'd feel useful, better than rennovating buildings. And it would be theirs. The more Ed thought about it, the more that thought settled in his head as if it had always been there.

"Gardens in the front, and fruit trees, and a big library," Al decided, knowing that his brother would be more interested in the latter.

"And a barn."

"Barn's important." There needed to be a place to house the cow and sheep and chickens. "Library, too." They should be near the river, but not so close that the land was flooded when it rained. "We should look for possible sites over the winter." Ed couldn't start too soon to find a place. There were prints that needed to be drawn, string drawn to map out the foundation. And then there needed to be wood.
