It started very well indeed. The room had been cleared of most furniture, leaving plenty of room to mingle while a few seats remained around the edges. Waiting for her guests, Katherine had only her own
music, still light and pleasant.
She was not afraid of doing things for herself; cleaning the rooms, arranging the furnishings left here, the long table of food - she was expecting a modest number - all of it was done by the princess who'd once kept proper estate without even her jointure for money.
She surveyed it now with a decided satisfaction. She could hope for the best, that the music would take its cue from the mood she was trying to create; but even in the worst case, she thought with a wry smile, it could not be worse than the chatter of the entire court.
