When James arrived, he was alone.

His cloak fluttered in the wind slightly when he stopped walking, exhaling in a puff of air, his hands buried in his pants pockets as he looked Snape up and down, fighting down the urge to sneer.

He hated him. He loathed him. And when Snape had told him the time and place, James knew that he had to play his cards carefully in order to come out of this both alive and triumphant.

"So? What do you want?" James asked, eyes never leaving Snape's.

Snape arched an eyebrow when James showed up without a second, purposing breaking the stare to look behind the other wizard. It had been painfully clear that Snape had asked him to a duel, one that he'd excepted, yet here he was without a second or any of the Marauders... What was Potter playing at?

Course, that didn't stop him from smirking smugly. "Don't tell me the lack of a second means that you're backing out, Potter..."

"I never back out of anything," James responded curtly, not making a move to take out his wand or move into an offensive stance, "and however much you make me want to vomit and however much I wished you were six feet under, I'm not here to fight you."

God, the words made bile rise in his throat, but James didn't allow himself to show a single thing other than cold hatred.

"I still don't understand why you've got your wand in a knot," James added, his tone cool. "I only spoke the truth."

"Everything you're saying points otherwise," Snape responded with an arched eyebrow, pausing to think about it before his smirk widens. "Or could it be that Black and Lupin told you about my last duel with the former and you decided that you were too afraid to end up in the clinic as well?"

Letting Potter back out of the fight? He didn't think so, and soon that smirk drops, his superior tone replaced with cold, cold anger.

"I warned you about hurting Lily again, and instead of heeding it, you made her cry."

James ignored the slight against being afraid; it was expected and though his pride badly wanted to take the bait, he remained motionless.

"It's you that hurt you, idiot," James snapped, his tone lowering into a growl, "because I only spoke the truth. How much have you told her, eh? About your time spent with Voldemort, what you've done, how long you left her alone? I'm betting nothing, so she doesn't turn tail and run like the wind, and trust me on this, you filthy git..."

And James' lips twitched into a scowl.

"When that happens, when she finds out, I'm going to be there with a wand to your throat."
