She found herself either walking around outside, or inside her room at the clinic, writing notes to her older self and exploring the PCD's network. Now that she could control her life again, she wanted to see the world as much as she possibly could, even if she was inside for half of it.
Then again, she already had lived for too long...
Spotting Mello, the child blinked in surprise. Mello...she still remembered him. The older Asuna hated him, but this Asuna found him quite interesting...but he was younger now--he didn't know about this place like she did.
Mello was walking carefully, not rushing his pace. He'd heard that this world was dangerous, but that was something he could have easily figured out by himself. One just had to take a look at the terrible state the city was in, as if it'd been recently hit by an earthquake or something equally destructive.
Spotting the girl as well, Mello stopped short. She looked like a completely innocent and harmless kid, but Mello knew better than to trust looks in such an odd 'world' (at the lack of a better word to define this place).
"Hey," he greeted her, hands resting inside his pockets and cheeks pink from the cold.
And he was good in not trusting looks alone--this seemingly harmless girl was, after all, one of the most powerful in her world, even if on the inside, she didn't exactly feel powerful. Not weak, though, just...empty.
Asuna stared up at him, her face unchanging, much like a doll. "...you're Mello. I remember you."
"Well, I don't," he stated dryly, waiting for her to introduce herself. Mello couldn't help but be unnerved at the lack of expression in this girl. She was like a female Near, geez. It was also unnerving that she could remember her future self while he couldn't.
"You're not the only one," she said, her mismatched eyes unmoving. "I am Asuna." Adjusting her heavy coat, she stepped forward. "'Mello' is kind of unfitting for you."
Just how many times had Mello heard comments like that one? Too many to remember them all. He didn't roll his eyes like he usually did, however. Instead, he kept staring at the girl as if she were an interesting and rare animal.
Mello took a step forward as well and smirked, proud and confident. "My name's the proof that looks can be deceiving," he said, before he asked the same question he'd been repeating to everyone he'd talked to. "What was your relationship with my older self?"
"I guess it is." At his question, she paused. It was something she had expected him to ask--in fact, she was going to answer it without his asking. "My older self didn't like you at all. But I didn't think you're that bad."
"Because we're different, even if we are the same person." Asuna shrugged. "You were a 'bad person'. You hurt a lot of people. So nobody really liked you."
There was something quite sinister about this whole matter. People kept repeating that Mello was evil, that he had even taken human lives. Why should his older self act like a criminal? ...Like Beyond Birthday, L's backup?
"............"
Mello's eyes darkened, narrowing as his mind considered the possibilities. Something very wrong was going to happen, he knew it. He had an idea of what it was...
"There's always a reason for every behaviour. You don't dislike me because you understand this, don't you?" he said lowly, his eyes turning away from the girl. The smirk was completely gone from his face, all his amusement faded.
At that, Mello turned his gaze back to her. Somehow, he doubted that she was talking about his current state as a 14 years old kid. For all she knew, he could still be dangerous, and 'anymore' was pretty an extreme word.
"You don't have the Death Note anymore." Her lowered gaze sharply turned back to Mello's eyes, and there was a hint of some sort of unknown emotion. Annoyance, perhaps? "So you can't hurt anyone."
"The Death Note...?" Whatever the hell that was, it sounded... deadly? Though Mello was pretty skeptical about the matter. What would happen if anyone stole his slingshot? Either he'd make a new one or would try a different approach. There were many ways to obtain the same result, after all.
"If I wanted to hurt someone, I'd do it with or without the Death Note," he stated firmly, staring at the girl with hard, determined eyes. "I don't know about that Death Note thing, but I know what my most important weapon is, and I sure as hell still have it."
At that, Mello laughed. Having a gun would be really cool, he was glad to know that his older self owned at least one. Not like he'd expected otherwise.
"No," he said with dark amusement, a finger raising to his own head. "My brain."

Hmm.

"If you remember your older self, you should know her reasons for disliking me. How is it you don't share her views?"
