First Movie

I took Jet to see his first movie, in a theatre, on Saturday. We chose Curious George because I thought it looked sweet and fairly non-threatening and with Will Farrell voicing the Man in the Yellow Hat, there would probably be enough hijinxs to keep me entertained as well. Jet does watch a few cartoons that are probably way too old for him (Samurai Jack and JLU), so I'm not normally worried about cartoon violence and whatnot with him, but there is a difference between seeing it on a TV in the safety of your own home vs. a giant screen with a very loud sound system, so yeah, Curious George seemed like safe fare.

Jet, being disturbingly like me at times, can be hard to decipher whether or not he's having fun sometimes. But, as he settled into his seat with his bag of M&Ms and the previews came on, he did say to me "This is pretty cool mommy." And that was all I needed to know.

The movie itself was quite sweet. The Man in the Yellow Hat now has a name, Ted, and is definitely not as remote or mysterious as he is in the books. Jis relationship with George in the movie is very nice. And George is wonderfully mischevious and has hugely expressive eyes. The movie itself is gorgeous to look at, all primary colours and soft lines, its nice to see a classically animated movie again in comparison with all the harsh, computer animated ones these days and just plain ugly animation in cartoons. Yes, there were instances of computer animation in George as well, but they were used sparringly and wisely. I also really liked the soundtrack to the movie. No one burst into song and dance numbers ala Disney or anything, they were just songs going on as the movie went on. The soundtrack was done by Jack Johnson, an artist who was actually recommended to me by my cousin Ryan last year and I thought was pretty good, so I was rather delighted to see he had done the soundtrack.

Overall, it was a very good first movie-going experience.

I did have a nice weekend overall, after a kinda icky last half of the week. Of course, I'm TERRIBLY frustrated with the male ice-hockey players and their losses over the weekend, but, as I keep reminding myself, in 2002 we lost to Sweden and barely beat Germany, and that ended just fine, so I'm trying not to panic yet. But its difficult when they are playing so lacklustre and there's no Stevie Y or Mario to kick these guys in their collective asses and get going and Pat Quinn still doesn't know how to solve the Trap. *sigh* I know, I know, all is not lost yet. The Finns were playing like they wanted it more, and Teemu Selanne looked like the happiest man alive out there, repeatedly taking it to Chris Pronger and just being a force to be reckoned with. Wish I could say the same for any of the Canadian boys. I was glad Braz joined me for the third period, it helped to share my anguish with someone :)

Good luck to the girls today as they play Sweden for the Gold medal!
