West vs. East

Man I'm chatty today...

Anyway, this will eventually be a question for anyone not from Toronto, or who has experience living in another big city besides Toronto.

Today I have to truck out to the very east end of the city by TTC. Normally, I'm with Mike and so we head to S and Jay's by car, meaning I don't really have to pay attention to where I'm going. But today I have to make my way out to nearly the boarder of Toronto and Scarborough by myself. This isn't such a bad thing except that I was raised in the WEST end of Toronto, which means I've managed to live in pretty much blessed ignorance of a good half of the city. Y'see, Toronto has this huge dividing line called Yonge St. (longest street in the world if you care...) You either live West of Yonge St. or East of it, and honestly, rarely do the twain meet. I've lived most of my life in the GTA and I have never lived east of Yonge St. I'd probably have a panic attack if I did. So, I had to call S and Jay's and ask just where the hell I'm going when I get off the subway in the wilds of the East end :)

But this leads me to my question; are there such big divisions in other major cities? I don't remember there being one in Montreal. Oh sure, there were the usual neighbourhood divisions, but not one where you can draw a line down the middle of the city and say you're either one or the other. Just curious I guess...
