Baby you can drive my car part I:
My husband's musical tastes and mine don't exactly... match. It's not that there isn't some overlap, because there is strangely enough, but I'm not into early hip-hop or a lot of indie stuff and he's not into the more mainstream stuff that I am (although here I must mention that by mainstream I do NOT mean current Top-40. I loathe that stuff). Now and then, he will suggest something that he thinks I'll like, and a few times, he's been right. And for his part, he let me play some of my music on the drive to Thunder Bay and didn't complain about the Hip or the Dylan or the Beatles. In fact, because I have extensive playlists of all three, he heard stuff he hadn't before, which I think helped make it a little easier for him.
Of late, he's been listening to a lot of the Beatles. He's never really listened to them other than the ubiquitous tunes that are played on oldie stations and whatnot. I, on the other hand, was raised to think the Beatles were gods and so have heard well, at least everything they've ever produced at least once. My brother recently inherited my dad's old laptop, complete with it's extremely large catalog of Beatles tunes, which my brother promptly added to my computer as well, bless him. So Graig's been listening to full Beatles' albums over the past few days and has actually been enjoying finding good songs that aren't overplayed. He's leaning towards Rubber Soul as being his favourite, which also happens to be my dad's favourite. Mine? The White Album. Anyway, I think it's great, but then I've always wondered how anyone couldn't like the Beatles, but I also acknowledge that I'm probably biased.
Baby you can drive my car Part II:
Last week my dad offered us his car. To keep. For free. He wants a new one and knowing he wouldn't get much for his 1999, over 300k on it Honda Accord, asked us if we'd like to have it. I kinda wanted it reaaalll bad. I mean, c'mon! Free car!! And a top of the line Honda Accord no less! Yeah, I know it's like 10 years old and has a zillion miles on it, but FREE CAR!! As you may guess, there are times I miss having a car, despite my not being able to drive one... But Graig, who, after ditching his last car had swore that he'd never own another car again, basically made good on that promise. He said that at the age the car is, it's upkeep would be too much on top of the insurance, gas etc. and that this would stress him out, just as it had with his previous car. I tried to convince him that this was a HONDA and not the crappy American-made thing he probably had (yeah, I'm a Japanese car snob), but he wasn't really buying that argument. I mean, I knew he had a point, but I was willing to try and keep it, even if it was just a year or so, 'cause damnit, I'm convinced we're going to NEED a car. But no use. I told my dad today we really appreciated the offer but we're going to decline. I'm weirdly disappointed about it, but I'll get over it. Heck, if I thought it would help, I'll even say that I'll go learn how to drive... oh well. It was a nice idea while it lasted.
And baby I love you.
