The last week or so, Graig and I have been in a movie-viewing whirlwind, with three greatly looked forward to movies seen in a week. Fortunately, none of them disappointed.
We finally caught
Michael Clayton, and all I can say is that my love for George Clooney is well founded (no matter what
Fabio says). The performances were all amazing (Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson) with a wonderfully non-linear narrative; enough to make you think and pay attention, but not enough to be annoying.
Yesterday, my darling husband and I took the day off of work so he could go to the dentist, and then we proceeded to see two movies, back to back. Our first viewing was
No Country For Old Men. Loved it. The Cohen brothers have yet to make a movie I have not enjoyed. Oh sure, I like some better than others (Big Lebowski being the high end, Barton Fink on the lower), and they didn't disappoint here. It's an atmostpheric movie all right, with terse dialogue (no doubt cribbed right from Cormac McCarthy's novel, that's his writing style all right), lots of tense violence, and terrific acting. Javier Bardem is a scary mother all right. I highly recommend it.
And after that, we caught the latest from director Wes Anderson,
The Darjeeling Limited. Graig's more of a Wes Anderson fan than I am (although I did love Rushmore and The Royal Tannenbaums), but I really liked this tale of three brothers on a 'spiritual' journey to India. Much of it takes place on a train, and Anderson uses this to some great comic effect, without losing the seriousness of the journey these brothers are attempting to partake. Once again, really great performances all around, and a terribly enjoyable movie.
It was a great day off, sleeping in, going for walks and seeing some great cinema!
