I just realised I haven't posted onto Livejournal for the last 14 months!
Anyway, I miss reading The Times in actual newsprint (I now pay the Murdoch's a small tidy sum a month for the privilege to scroll through it online). That's one of the many things I loved about London. If not just for its political leanings and football coverage but also for its non-serious writing on lifestyle stuff. Take The Times article on martinis in its Food and Drink section that I came across today. I just loved the opening paragraph (article can't be reproduced 'cos The Times website is now fully subscription only):
"Few cocktails have such panache as a martini. If it were a gent, it would wear its hat at a rakish angle; if a lady, its scarlet lipstick would never slip. Noël Coward declared that the perfect martini was made by “filling a glass with gin and waving it in the general direction of Italy” (in reference to the vermouth). My favourite witticism, most often attributed to Dean Martin but more likely to have come from the San Francisco columnist Herb Caen, is: “Martinis are like breasts - one is too few, and three too many.”
As if to reinforce the whole pretentiousness of the article, it adds this judgemental line as well:
"Head into the realms of flavoured martinis (lychee, passion fruit, chocolate, coffee), and you’re no longer a classy drinker."
