Day 140 April 12, 2007 Thursday
Today CLASSES started. ON MY BIRTHDAY! Oh the horror! Haha, and usually 21 is a big age in America but in Japan where the drinking age is 20-it was not such a big deal ;)
But it was not that bad, I was placed in Japanese 4a which-as usual- is a little over my skill level but so far I don’t feel completely overwhelmed… yet. I know with 8 classes-some easy no work classes- I am going to be overwhelmed sometime this quarter… I hope the break down is not too hard on me…
Anyways, had Japanese class, a Preparation for Advanced Japanese, and Intermediate Grammar class. Most of them seem at my level and I think I will actually be learning in them and actually have a chance to focus on my Japanese finally! Since it was the beginning of school it was soooo crowded! Even the train (super crowded because April is when all the jobs start) and Obirin bus stop (Obirin increased 2,000 students this Semester bringing the total to 7,000 students in the College. fyi with kindergarten, elementary, jr.high, high, college, and graduate school Obirin is 9,000 students) were super-duperly crowded. Whew.
Coming home my Host Family had ordered a feast of SUSHI, and Tempura!! It was so good, and they even made me a low calorie mango cake! It really was so nice of them, the kids as my present sang a Hawaiian song and danced. Even 1 year old Shiina was dancing and saying the words! Kawaii!
After the kids went to bed, and after Papa-san had come home, the people “over 21” drank and talked together. I tried some sake, and different kinds of umeshuu (try umeshuu if you can!) and beer. Since my Host fathers job is selling Sake and alcohol (and since they drink everynight) he knew what kind of stuff was good and tried to discuss alcohol with me. er, sorry I don’t know too much…
Thanks for all your messages and greetings! When I come back to America all those who are 21-lets go to the bars!
