So, I was curious and I had to go find the posting I think all the wanking is/was about. Then I wrote a reply, and then I realized it was full so I'm shuffling over this way to complain!

Fandom doesn't exist without wank *shakes head* It's sad, but true. I think it's noticeable in Top Gear because it's a smaller fandom on LJ, and a lot of the comms are flocked, and a lot of the fans who seem to be doing anything are friends with each other. When new people come in it does come off a bit like a private party that's being crashed. People without much fandom experience will feel very awkward in that sort of situation and possibly get resentful, because they're on the "outside" of everything. People used to fandom, on the other hand, are used to some things just being natural that aren't generally there in Top Gear (bad writers being run off, fics on personal ljs not being flocked, etc.), so they have things to automatically dislike, too.
But I get the impression that a lot of the people in the fandom (and a lot of the people complaining about it in that anon post) haven't been in (m)any of the hardcore fandoms, from various discussions that I've seen. If those people going "ew" on fandomsecrets think that Top Gear RPS is gross, I'd love to show them some Supernatural stuff haha
Thanks! Yours there is so cute, too!

You make a lot of good points, that's very true. I guess I just have trouble understanding the need to be mean for no apparent reason instead of going past it and just being pleasant.
You know that whole, if you don't have anything nice to say... sort of thing.

LOLOL I'm pretty sure if most people in fandom have ever heard that, they don't think it applies. I think it's viewed as giving people the best of both worlds: it's a culture where they fit in AND it's one where they can be the sorts of rude, angry people they could never be IRL.
