I've been riding this high for a few weeks now and just have to share.
I don't know if any of you follow horse racing but this seems to be "THE YEAR" to watch.
I've an avid equestrian and have a very close relationship with my trainer Lesli. She used to have a client named Lisa Funk. Lisa Funk is engaged to Calvin Borel (this name may or may not mean anything). Lesli calls me the weekend of the Kentucky Derby and says she's taken the weekend off to visit friends and that I should watch the Kentucky Oaks, which is the filly race on Friday.
I'm to keep an eye out for Rachel Alexandra the horse her friend Calvin is riding. Thus I proceed to watch one of the most fantastic horse races I've ever seen. This filly paces the leader for most of the track and then through the last turn just walks away from the field to win by 20 lengths (that's retarded big). She sets a track record. Calvin says that this is the best horse he's ever ridden. The owner says that fillies should ride with fillies and colts should ride with colts. The Triple Crown are colt races.

The next day Calvin is scheduled to ride a 50-1 shot cheap-o-depot horse named Mine That Bird. I read in the sports page the night before where they had a run down on who to bet on and the exact words were "save your money." Les tells me that when her husband and Calvin make it to the track the morning of the Derby they find out that the favorite has scratched (dropped out). Calvin calls Lisa his fiance and asked her to bring his suit. She laughs at him but does any way (he tells this story on Leno). Thus proceeds to be an EVEN MORE EXCITING race. Mine That Bird is DEAD LAST for most of the race, so far behind he is often out of the camera shot, and then the last quarter mile it like all the other horses are standing still. Calvin weaves him in and out of traffic yelling at one jockey to get out of the way (you can see them scoot left) and then just juices on through a microscopic hole to win. Les told me that they can tell how fact they're going by counting the posts in between the quarter markers. That horse ran a quarter in less than 25 seconds. He was HAULING ASS. This is the biggest upset since the 1940s and the second largest payout. Lisa bet on the favorite. Lesli bet on Calvin. (also mentioned on Leno). Rachel Alexandra was 3 seconds faster than the Derby racers.

Fast forward to the Preakness which is the second leg of the Triple Crown. Rachel Alexandra has been sold to someone significantly LESS sexist and they have decided to enter her in the generally colt only Preakness (costs $100 grand to do this) and she's to ride against Mine That Bird. Calvin has to choose between the Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird as his ride. He chooses Rachel because, like he said, she's the best horse he's ever ridden (and he's ridden THOUSANDS of races). This was another INTENSE RACE! Rachel has position 13 (very low) in the race, where as Mine That Bird I believe was 1 as the favorite. Rachel stays at the head of the pack for most of the race and Mine that Bird is yet again at the back with Mike Davis in the irons. She's working hard against the boys and the last leg of the race, Mine That Bird (god I'm sick of typing that long ass name) puts the hooves to the dirt and books it to the front Rachel barely holds on to the lead for FIRST and Mine that Bird comes in Second. It was NUTS. She's the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years and Calvin is two races in to having a personal Triple Crown.

The next race is the Belmont Stakes. Right now they're talking about not racing Rachel as that is a longer race. Mine That Bird is yet again out of a jockey (Davis has prior engagements) and hopefully Bird's owners don't have their noses outta wack and will let Calvin ride again. But the long and the short of it is the last few weeks have been amazing in the horse industry and I'm glad the poster boy for horse racing is not only a very talented rider but a wonderful person.
