Occupational accident

Mar 01, 2006 10:12

I heparinised my right index finger at work last night. I shattered an ampoule of heparin causing a 4 mm X 3 mm shard of glass to lodge itself in my finger. It took about 2 hours to stop bleeding.

If you are an Australian taxpayer you paid for my bandaids :)

heparin, injury, work, nursing

We've been warned so many times about ampoules breaking, but I'd never seen it happen.

I was beginning to think it was a myth.

Also, lol, you had heparin in your cut (sorry).

(All my sentences these days are starting with this.)

While I was in Queensland, I started to get the hang of it but Dr Hussein kept telling me to do it with more force, faster harder sooner stronger. I was too worried about it breaking, too.

Also, I bet it did not hurt as much as all the people below think it did.

Probably a bit painful, but more annoying (with the bandaids, and the constantly bleeding and such)

You didn't have the hang of opening ampoules?

Never done it before. Have now. Getting better at real clinical stuff.

I forget that med students don't get real clinical stuff until later in the course.
