Spinning, swivelling and swerving. The music rose and fell with effortless skill and as she followed its lead, the musicians egged each other to perform more beautiful songs. The sparkling light created patterns on the rich green carpet, so deep in its colour one might fear drowning in it. Crystal glittered on the side and the blue ceiling was decorated with small pink flowers which seemed to sway to the pretty melodies.
She passed the beautiful host, admiring herself in the mirror; passed the old man, remembering days of other, more magnificent balls, before passing the jumpy youngster, eager to be in on the festivities. She twirled and turned and made a bow to honour her partner with his fluffy white hair, inherited from his dear mother. Her own hair bounced in beautiful curls, adorned with a golden hair piece, and she felt as if she were lifted off the ground.
Then a whistle, a call and it was time to return home. The clock had struck twelve and the music stopped as all birds startled; flying up and away. The grass bowed one last time in the wind while the river continued along its path. The sun hid behind the petals of the flowers in the tree. The host had already turned back into the narcissus hovering over the river’s edge under the shade of the old tree as the puppy was already halfway home. The lamb ran back towards its mum, grazing unperturbed a little ways away. The butterfly in her hair stayed for one more moment until a sudden turn of the head made it rush too. The spell was broken, the dream was lost and she, too, was on her way.
