The boy looked down over the railing. It really wasn’t high enough in his opinion. His foot slipped a little and he grabbed the iron bar more securely, not wanting to fall prematurely to his death. It would have to do. He was pretty sure it would do the trick. Inching closer, he wondered if anyone would miss him in this small getaway. He doubted it.
By now, he knew people did not expect too much from him. They all assumed he was a lazy slacker; someone who cares about nothing and threw caution in the wind. His classmates, parents, teachers, none of them cared enough to realise he had the highest average in his class or that he had never skipped a class. Instead, they’d wonder out loud if he’d become a drug-addict or a garbage man, as if he wasn’t even in the room. Fortunately, he’d been blessed with a great group of friends. Aware his family wasn’t well off, his friends realized in order to get by, he worked several jobs on top of studying every night.
Nevertheless, even they were not enough to keep him from falling. They, too, required his attention and he had become tired of the feeling he was being pulled in five different directions.
Just a couple of steps and his worries would be over, though. He wouldn’t have to think about how to manage his jobs, school and his social life. He had become so tired of it all, of the careful juggling and the pressure he faced each day. What he needed was a getaway, before he could become crazy.

A girl took small steps until she was right in front of the fence. She looked up into the sky. The weather was beautiful today: the sky was coloured, decorated only by two little puffy clouds. The temperature was a little cold but it hardly interfered with the delight of such a rare day.
Once she’d managed to make it over the fence, she thought about her peers and what they must be up to on a day like this. The girls would be all over town, shopping, while the guys would hang out in the park, smoking. She had never been close to anyone. They all only knew her as the intelligent, quiet and polite girl, but never bothered look deeper. She suddenly realized that she would miss them.
The wind blew her hair in front of her eyes. Tucking it behind her ear, she looked down at her clothes and wiped away some ghostly dust only she could see. The girl grinned at the silliness of her action. Her thoughts wandered off to think about her parents, the people who had taught her how to look after herself like this. Despite making sure she had everything she could possibly want, they, too, had their faults. They only enforced one rule: their children could not fail in anything. Endless streams of lectures would ensue should she were to break this rule. She would be forced to spend even more time on her homework, sacrificing even more of her evenings and much needed sleep.

A door opened far away from behind, startling her from her thoughts and she turned back to see who’d come. Finally, he’d reached fresh air, as he let go of the railing he looked up to see whose peace he was disturbing. His eyes widened as she gripped the fence a little tighter.
Together, they stood on the roof of their school as the sun turned orange and lay down for bed.
