i arrive...!

i have no idea where it's stated that we have to fill out this survey-thingie, but i'm going to follow the herd anyway, because it seems like the most efficient method to get my ideas accross, don't you think?

name: carla

age: about three months shy of 24

location: panama city, panama. as in the small country in central america, not the beach city in florida.

about me: i am a chemical engineer. i also love astronomy, and like history and philosophy very much. but most of all i love writing, it's been my passion since i was about seven and it's... really something i can't help but do. i'm a friendly girl, silly, hyper most of the time, usually pretty clueless, funny on the sarcastic side of the spectrum. i like anime & manga, comics, and many, many TV shows and movies. i love music, especially rock (of all subgenres), but i will listen to just about everything. i'm a fangirl, yes; i love to talk and squeal and rant about my fandoms, but i don't think i can be grouped into the "mindless fangirling" masses. it's just fandom, after all. check my profile to see what i'm into at the moment. my fandoms come and go, it's like the cycle of life, only with a whole lot more smilies and netspeak.

about my journal: my LJ is supposed to be 50% friends-only, but i keep forgetting to lock my posts ^^;;; it is basically a ficlog where i post to keep track of my own writing, as well as an incentive to myself. i try for all my posts to have something about my writing in them-- new chapters, scenes, snippets of scenes. some of the time, you'll be subjected to my "pull on hair" rants, so beware; i'm very critical about my own writing, i'm never satisfied with it... and i let people know. and i just talk too much for my own good (i'm sure you've noticed), so i usually end up writing about SO much more other stuff than just my writing. the extra stuff usually includes a healthy dose of squeeage and fangirling, with a little bit of ranting, music, sports, movies and even some science stuff, because i'm a science geek, in case you didn't notice from my chosen career ;)

what i write: prose, mostly fanfiction. if you have some of the same interests as me, you might just find a story you like, since i write fanfiction 95% of the time. and the fanfiction is generally within the romance/drama/humor ranges, though i've been known to miraculously pull off intrigue/mystery plots once every blue moon. as far as original stuff goes, i write fiction, which you'll hear about every once in a while if you friend me. i have a couple (or five) original novels that are either planned out or already started, but given the fact that i have zero discipline for long-term projects (my muse is very flighty and gets easily distracted by new, shiny fandoms), i can only cross my fingers that at least one of them will be finished before i turn 80. they're mostly young adult stuff-- relationship drama, growing up and making mistakes, and all those clichés we love to hate-- but i have one in particular that has more of a fantasy/adventure plot and another one that will be darker and with a suspense/intigue feel to it. i'm definitely a character writer, but i always have a plot. i'm also long-winded; drabbles in my world are very rare. i write for myself first and foremost; of course, i do take into account the tastes of and the comments received from my audience, and any help is appreciated. i'd love to get published someday, but ultimately i write for myself, because writing is how i express myself, and as such even if i had no audience, i would write. all of my stuff can be found here, including bits and pieces of a few of my originals.

what i don't write: introspection. action. heavy drama/angst. graphic slash. then again, if you look hard enough, i'm sure you'll find at least one exception to these among the stuff i've written.

what i read: basically fiction, mostly fantasy/sci-fi or mysteries. i generally prefer plot-driven to character-driven but the characters have to be well-rounded, as well. my favorite book is louisa may alcott's little women and its sequels. i also like conan doyle's sherlock holmes, anything that has to do with arthurian legends or mythology (especially greek), dan brown's stuff, the caballo de troya series by jj benitez, jim butcher's the dresden files, jo rowling's harry potter series, and i've read stephenie meyer's twilight (just the first book, will read the rest as soon as i can) and liked it-- it was entertaining in its cheesiness. you won't get me to admit it's a well-written book (much less the incredibly amazing masterpiece tweens seem to think it is), but consider it a guilty pleasure.

what i don't read: self-help. no kidding, you guys might classify literature into "fiction" and "non-fiction" but i think of it in terms of "self-help" and "not self-help." yes, there is such a thing as a self-help book in the fiction section. and i avoid those like the plague. i don't read poetry. i also don't like things that are too dramatic or angsty (no need to make myself depressed). i prefer longish stuff, drabbles are ok if they're really striking but it's not what i usually go for. and i tend to avoid stream-of-consciousness and introspection, though this is not a rule per se.

could i edit someone else's stuff: sure, i love editing: be it spelling/grammar, character development, plot issues, or just helping out with ideas. i love doing that. so long as it's not a chore-- i don't have time to be someone's regular beta-reader, but i can read a one-shot or a chapter once in a while.

looking for: just smart, friendly people who write because it's enjoyable. i think that's the most important part and i always like to read things that people had fun with, regardless of genre or style.

just a note: if you add me, please leave me a comment here or in this post, else i may never notice you've friended me. if you can add maybe why you friended me or what we have in common beside writing, that'd be ever better ^_^
