People. Seriously. Use your brain when tipping!! Tip to the amount of service given, not the money paid.
If you have gift cards, great for you, but don't pretend that absolves you from gratuity. You should always tip to the check amount before any discounts are applied, not after.
I had this family come in today and order $53.01 worth of food (should have been between $5 and $10 tip). They had two $25 gift cards, and then gave me exactly $3.01 in cash to cover the rest. They got up and left, and sure enough, not one red cent was left behind. What pisses me off the most is that I knew it was going to happen.
So what's the mentality here? It's not like the order magically took itself, or our robots brought out the food, or the drink glasses were literally bottomless... I still did a hell of a lot for them (including for not charging them for three refills on unrefillable drinks), so how do they justify not paying me even ten percent on the cash they gave me?
[shakes head] Please tell me no one else would be this stupid. It makes a server like me so furious they can hardly restrain themselves from breaking shit in the restaurant.
