Went to the Boekenbeurs today and bought the following books:
- Armstrong Karen, Een geschiedenis van GOD, De Bezige Bij, 2006 (1993): The original English title is 'A History of God, From Abraham to the Present: the 4000 year Quest for God'. It's a history of the concept of God throughout judeaism, christianity and islam. Looks interesting enough. Bought the Dutch version because they didn't have the English one.
- Broeckaert Bert, Vanden Hove Isabelle, Grote rituelen in de wereldgodsdiensten, Davidsfonds, 2005: A nice book listing and explaining all the major rituals (baptism, marriage, burial) in the five world religions.
- Brown Dan, The Da Vinci Code, Corgi Books, 2004 (2003): Finally bought 'the book of the millennium'. It was only 10€, so it' wasn't all that expensive. It's the English pocket version. I'm pretty curious now.
Eleni, you'll probably be sorry to hear that I debated buying a Paulo Coello (sp?) box of five books, but I went for this book and the Neil Gaiman one instead.. *blushes*
- De Schepper Jef, Wat christenen geloven, Lannoo, 2006: Lots of religious books, most of them for school purposes, like this one. It's a simple but complete guide to all things 'christianity', from 'christians in the world' and 'the religious life' to the concepts of christianity. Hope this is as good as it looks!
- Gaiman Neil, American Gods, Headline Book Publishing, 2004 (2001): I have no idea if this book is going to be any good, but I wanted some 'light' reading as well, I'd heard / read a lot of good things about this one AND Neil Gaiman is one of Tori Amos' favourite authors, she references him in a lot of her lyrics, so I decided to just go and buy it. It's a risk! Ooooh, I feel daring!
- Gore Al, Een ongemakkelijke waarheid, Meulenhof, 2006: The Dutch translation of 'An Inconvenient Truth', the book that goes with the movie that goes with the Powerpoint. Haven't seen the movie yet, but the books full of pictures :D. Why is that good? I'm a teacher guys! Anyway, I bought this one for myself rather than for school purposes...
- Martin Sylvia, Futurisme, Taschen, 2005: Taschen is such a great publishing company! Their books are pretty, cheap but good! This is a smaller book on futurism, the Italian modernist type of painting I did my thesis in, or at least half of it. I'm still fascinated by them, they're such an amazing movement and imho they're a lot more interesting and important than Picasso's cubist movement...
- Roosen Erwin, Waar woont God? en 100 andere geloofsvragen, Averbode, 2004: This book is called 'Where does God live? and 100 other questions of faith'. It's for children, between 8 and 12, but my first years will benefit greatly from this as well. It gives very, very simple but still correct answers to questions concerning christianity, like 'Did Christ really rise from the grave?' or 'Why doesn't God answer when I pray?' Lovely little book!
- Schmidt Annie M.G., Jip en Janneke. Poppejans gaat varen en andere verhalen, Querido, 2005 (1963): This is AWESOMENESS! Ninjoo will certainly know this one, it's a children's books classic in the Dutch language area. Jip and Janneke are a boy and a girl who go through all kinds of adventures together, and Annie M.G. Schmidt is an extremely popular author (or at least was, she died) and her stories are amazing: smart, funny and simple. I bought this one for my god daughter, she's eight now and she starts to enjoy reading, so I hope she'll like this as much as I did.
- Steel Carlos, Historische Inleiding tot de Wijsbegeerte, Universitaire Pers, 1989: This thing is ancient, and it's one of my first-year philosophy text books. I'd borrowed this one from a friend's boyfriend, and I never got round to buying it until it was exhausted. And now I bought it! It sucks, but for nostalgic reasons I love having it...
- Zohra & Onzia Yurek, Zohra en de gazellen. Volksverhalen en sprookjes uit Marokko, Uitgeverij Van Halewijck, 2005: I already love this book! Zohra is a Belgian singer of sorts, with Moroccon roots. She wrote a book with Moroccon folk tales, and what's so lovely about this book is that every tale is followed by a vocabulary list, explaining words like khalif or the meaning of the number 7 in Moroccon tradition!
This is Jip & Janneke:
