So, I am now a professional role-playing game editor. This is true because my first check arrived to compensate me for editing
Annalise, the latest game by
hamsterproph (Nathan Paoletta). Nathan wrote one of the indie games on my top ten favorites list --
carry: a game about war, which I ran for friends at
AdamCon.
This opportunity knocked on my door after
indie_insurgent (Robert Bohl) said nice things about my substantive edit of his new game,
Misspent Youth.
I have also discussed some potential projects with
drivingblind (Fred Hicks) of
Evil Hat Productions. I may be working on
The Dinocalypse Trilogy by Benjamin Baugh and some of Evil Hat's other cool games.
My business strategy is simple: edit about five pages or 3000 words of a manuscript at no charge. This free edit pass proves to customers that I know my craft, shows them what they get for their money, and helps me estimate projects more accurately. I do not know what other editors charge, but I suspect that my rates are very competitive. Perhaps most important: I am an editor who understands role-playing game design.
What I Do
I offer a substantive editing pass as my premier service:
- Copy Editing: I improve spelling and grammar, fix punctuation, tighten up and clarify the language, and verify proper word usage.
- Heavy Editing: I ensure uniformity of voice and style, smooth out transitions, and check references.
- Text Flow: I examine the whole text to ensure that it flows well and suggest ways to reorganize the text and improve readability.
- Design Advice: If I see glaring holes in game design, I will point these out to the author.
I also offer services for subsequent editing passes before and after layout. I can also help an author with a text outline and organization before he or she writes the manuscript.
I prefer to edit on-screen using Microsoft Word's "change tracking" feature. Google Docs has a similar, but far weaker, change tracking feature that I can use in a pinch.
You Can Help
Tell your friends! If you know people who write games, let them know that they can afford an editor and tell them about my services. My email is adamdray@gmail.com.
If you write games, talk to me about your upcoming projects and editing needs. Don't wait until you have a complete manuscript. We should start our business relationship as soon as you start your project.
