in honor of my last day of work at SHA, i present my dorky autoCAD survey:
1. which is your favorite autoCAD command?
2. which is your least favorite autoCAD command?
3. which command have you most recently learned?
4. do you prefer to select object then enter the command, or enter the command then select object?
5. keyboard entry or mouse clicks?
6. which version of the program did you learn on? use now?
7. which glitch most annoys you?
8. which command never ceases to amaze you in its brilliance?
9. what has been the most welcome change over the different versions you've used?
10. favorite line color?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. i love them all, and it varies day to day. but i really like SCALE and ROTATE by REFERENCE. without the reference option, these commands are soooo clunky. sad to say it took me a while to discover them. i think about all those lost hours spent scaling and rotating manually and i cry.
2. while i appreciate and love the end result of DIVIDE/INSERT BLOCK, it seems to take forever to go through all those command lines everytime. and you've got to do all kinds of extra calculations if you know where you want the two terminal blocks to be positioned, cuz contrary to common sense, they won't be at the end of the line. also, i'm stupid so i always forget to add 1 to the # of desired objects in order to get the right # of segments. then if you mess up, you have to start all over again.
3. "ZOOMFACTOR" changes the rate at which the scroll wheel zooms in and out. absolutely AWESOME! if you really want to screw with someone, secretly change their zoomfactor to 3 and watch the aggravation that follows. chances are they don't know how to fix the problem. they might even go buy a new mouse, you creep.
4. usually i select the objects, then enter the command. theoretically, though, the other way is better, since there are some stupid commands that tell you to select an object after you enter the command even if you already have one selected when you start the command--"DIV" comes to mind. i can't doubt autoCAD, though, because whenever i think i've discovered a fault with the program, it turns out that there's a good reason it's the way it is. in the case of "DIVIDE" i think the reason is that you can never divide more than one object at a time, so they want to make sure you can only select one object. (this is also the reason you get a pickbox and can't draw a window to select.)
5. i NEVER use icons. NEVER NEVER NEVER.
6. 2000, but then i used autoDESK for a while at my old job. at school i use 2002, but at work it's crappy 2000. i'll have to update to 2004 soon. wish i could say i learned on 14.
7. it seems that in v2000, you can't deselect items using a window when you're using the STRETCH command. stretch is hard enough! i know this is fixed in v2002 thankfully.
8. not really a command, but the simple crossing window vs. left-to-right window is so great. why doesn't every program have this? everytime i use illustrator i want to smash it because of this oversight. so so simple, but so powerful.
9. the improved "PEDIT": select multiple is the best. have you ever tried to join 100 polylines one by one??? ugh.
10. magenta!!! (with #15 in close 2nd)
