Ama-con, and costume help

Jul 15, 2014 18:53

So, I went to our local 3rd annual Ama-con, put on by our local library. I'm pretty sure it was twice as large as last year (first year I was out of town, so couldn't go).
Some great booths. Good artists, although the one I was hoping to see from last year wasn't there. :( Did manage to get a few cute monster watercolors, though. :)

The panels had their own room this time, but they weren't all that interesting to me, and there weren't that many. The con was originally set as a steampunk con, but has branched out quickly. Still a lot of steampunk stuff-which I'm not that keen on, and of course anime-which I'm also not that keen on.
Although I did go to the two preliminary costume contests, which was very interesting. And wow, we have some great costume makers around here.

Of course, being local, I saw several of my families, and one of my older kids. The joy and risk of going to a geek event in your own town. ;)

Cute hat:

Saw this one guy who made great armor. He had on a Judge costume from Judge Dredd. O.M.G. It was prefect. From close up.
Part of the group also a leather maker which was good. I talked to him about bustiers and etc, and he convinced me that it would be a bad idea.

Here's my kimono. It's basically an heirloom that I got from a family I stayed with in Japan. So, no altering or hurting of the kimono. I also have the obi, which is a maroon-ish with horizontal pinstripes, but I thought I would be using something other that that.

The white with spots cotton kimono in front of it is the under kimono (meant to keep the silk one clean while wearing it).

I was thinking something like a Firefly 'verse person who looks slightly harmless, or like a merchant, but hides stilettos in the bun, and is kickass.
Originally thought a leather-ish bustier, but would be too thick. And, after seeing all the bustiers Saturday I don't want my boobs up that high. Maybe one of the waist cincher things?
The leather guy I talked to, when I said kickass lady, said it sounded like Zena, and suggested leather/fabricated armor that was on a fabric sort of thing so it wouldn't be too hot. Which sounds cool, but I don't know that it would look right over a kimono. Then I thought maybe under the kimono, maybe, as a surprise sorta thing. *sigh*

Thoughts, anyone?
