Landsknecht progress - Wams

As mentioned previously, I do not work fast. However when things click, things tend to move rapidly. :0)

The bulk of the outfit is done! Just minor finishing work such as hooks and eyes, a bit of topstitching and some eyelets and ties, and we are good to go!

The Wams went much faster than the Hosen did, but by this point I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted for the sleeves so there was much less dithering and second guessing. I also buggered the whole thing up more than once, but the 'mistakes' ended up looking better than what I had intended. Therefore, I meant to do that. Yep. I did.

I made myself a half corset to control my bustline a bit - I definitely fall on the girl shaped side of things and did not want to change the lines of the wams overly as it is a male garment after all. The corset flattens things out just enough. For the wams I used the same pattern block as my gown but removed the curve for the bust. I cut the pieces in alternating colours to match the hosen and then fit it to myself while wearing the corset. Fastest part of this entire outfit so far!

I had decided a while back that I wanted 'leg o mutton' style sleeves as they were less likely to get dragged through my food and drink at events. I cut two normal narrow sleeves with the seam lines oriented to the back of my arm and then I cut two large rectangles of the same fabric for the base, and some contrasting for slashing. The rectangle on one side was sewn together with the red/gold brocade, gathered and then stitched just below the elbow and at the shoulder. I machine sewed the inner sleeve, and hand sewed the two outer poofs closed. I then cut the decorative layer on the bias. Second sleeve was constructed similarly, but with red wool bias strips sewn to look like a barber pole.

note: slashing fabric on the bias, while preventing fraying, will change size drastically. I had to do some creative stitching and decorating to keep things under control. Very pleased with the results, which look much better in person than the photos. :0)

This outfit is going to look completely ridiculous. I am most pleased.
