And now that I have earwormed you with Python tunes, I give you some pictures and some blather.
Due to some "excitement" at work, the costuming has been very on again and off again, what with being laid off in the spring, brought back, shuffled around and then shuffled around again. My old department and shift pretty much no longer exist, but apparently they like me so just kept moving me around until they found me a relatively stable spot to be. I'll take it.
Still fixated on all things German. At some point in the middle of the construction of my burgundy velvet gown I decided to start a mans outfit for myself as I decided their stuff was way too silly not to have one. I drafted a pattern for knee length hose for myself and a codpiece and rummaged through the fabric stash and found the perfect combination of white and reds. I cut the hose out of the white fabric on the bias, sewed it loosely together and then fit it to myself - lots of bending and creative use of mirrors to do so. It worked out, fits like a glove and I can move in it very well.
I got the hosen completely constructed and then I stalled for months. In essence, I was spoiled for choice and could not figure out how I wanted to decorate them. There was just too much variety in the woodcuts and artwork I was using. I would tinker a bit, and then it would sit for a week or two. I would tinker a bit more and then it would sit for a month. Rinse, repeat.
Finally in a flurry of inspiration I got the hosen slashing done in two days. Sigh. Little bit of tweaking left to do, but they fit very well and I love how they look.
All of the fabric slashing is cut on the bias. None of the edges are finished as they won't fray much. The very slight fuzziness of the edges actually looks quite nice, and the slight curl of the fabric just shows off the white underneath it that much better.
I have a pair of shoes that will pass for now, but I do need to invest in some leather to make a proper pair. Fortunately there is little difference between mens and ladies shoes of the same period so they will do double duty for all of my German kit.
