JADE VS GENIS ad_libitum_npcs June 22 2011, 01:39:07 UTC

[Why did he sign up again? The prizes apparently appealed to him more than he thought, even if he didn't exactly know what said prizes were. Bringing out his kendama, Genis swings it casually before glancing over at his opponent.

It'd certainly be interesting to see how this went, considering they were both spellcasters.]

[Jade stands at ease with his hands in his pockets. With having lived on Atlas but not having the memory of it, he must assume that his fighting style is known to the other contestants. A bit of a handicap, and one that could cost him this match. Even so, he keeps his spear fused to his right arm instead of holding it at the ready. Every little bit of surprise helps.]

[He glances his opponent over. The boy isn't terribly impressive-looking, but appearances are often deceiving. What's that he's holding - a flail? No, some sort of ball-and-stick game. An odd choice for a weapon. He wonders if there must be some sort of gimmick to it, like Anise's doll.]

Let's not keep the crowd waiting, now.

[Oh! The Colonel! Genis blinks as he pulls out his kendama.] So I'm fighting against you? ["This can't end well.

Still, the Colonel has a point. Genis waits for the MC to call "Three! Two! One! START!" before jumping back to the side of the arena as he begins to cast his spell arte.

Come on, come... he just hopes he casts faster than the Colonel or it's game over.]

[So he's a fonist, or whatever the Atlas equivalent of a fonist is? In that case, Jade had better act quickly... and without hurting his opponent too badly.]

O mighty explosion. Energy Blast!

[That hurt! Genis winces, covering his arms in a weak attempt to protect him from the blast.... and yet, he just keeps on going.]

Gentle winds, gather before me and transform into blades of air. Cyclone!

[... Cyclone? That's a new one by him. And Jade doesn't especially want to find out what it's like firsthand. He makes a dash to the left, well out of the way of Genis' arte. Unfortunately, that means he has less time to cast an arte of his own.]

Grant mine enemies a final rest. Flame Burst!

[Of course, his opponent could have already been halfway through chanting a verse by the time he's able to cast. Whether this one hits or not is unknown.]

[He's not the best at dodging, even three years later, so he goes ahead and casts a shield instead:] Guardian!

[It thankfully negates most of the flames, but Genis knows he's fighting a losing battle this time. Jumping back to cast better, he curses under his breath before going at it again. Third time has to be the charm!]

[Why shield when dodging requires less concentration and no mana? Jade starts to wonder if he hasn't been approaching this match in the wrong way. His opponent is clearly a powerful spellcaster, but that's all he has. He doesn't even have a proper weapon. He's just a skinny kid with a few strong artes.]

[An idea starts to take form. Instead of simply dodging Genis' next attack, Jade continues to run toward him. As he closes in, he draws his spear.]

[Oh crap. Genis does what any logical kid his age would: he runs. Of course, he ends up with his back pressed against the wall as he tries to figure out a next course of action.

He's really not a fighter. Not in the sense of these Coliseum bouts. Should he---end it quickly and just let this continue? Maybe. He'd feel bad about "going easy" but it wasn't like he didn't have other things to do.

So he stops to catch his breath while running. That, of course, wouldn't end up well for him.]

[Well, that worked better than he anticipated. As Genis stops to rest, Jade stops about three meters behind him. Were this a real battle, he wouldn't have thought twice about running the boy through, but this is just a game. That sort of brutal efficiency isn't what the spectators came to watch, and it's not what he came here to advertise.]

[He plants the butt of the spear on the ground and leans against it. With his left hand, he pushes his glasses back into place.]

You know, there wouldn't be any shame in admitting defeat right now.

[If this had been anyone else, Genis would have.... well okay, he's still giving Colonel a glare as he folds his arms.]

No shame, yes, but what happened to giving these people a "good show?" [Read between the lines, Jade: he doesn't mind losing as long as the people seem to like how he lost.]

As you wish. Please say 'hello' to Tear for me.

[With that said, he charges in and closes the gap between them. With extra care to not hit Genis with the pointy end of his spear, Jade catches the front of his shirt and tosses him upward.]

[There isn't enough lingering mana in the air to make the second part of his strike arte more painful, but there's enough to make it flashy.]

Goring Hell!
