My favorite professor from UF refers to musical-theater types as twinks. I am currently in need of some twink.
I have to choose a musical to direct for next year. And my brain has been squeezed dry. I'm sure I'm missing a couple of good ones, but I need help.
Here are the parameters...
1. Must be appropriate for K-12 graders. I doesn't have to be squeaky clean, but the parent of a 5 year old should be not be shocked that their child is in the show. So NO Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, Cabaret, Chess, etc.
2. Sets and costumes should be reasonable. As much as I adore Camelot, the castles, forests, armor, etc. wouldn't fly.
3. The music should be of "medium" difficulty. We have some decent singers, but few of them actually read music. Our 1st sopranos are a little lazy... ditto 1st tenors. This is the reason I've given up the idea of doing Into the Woods. Too many soprano roles and the music is UBER difficult.
4. Shouldn't make me puke. Things that make me puke include the collected works of Rogers and Hammerstein, Once Upon a Mattress, Seussical, Paint Your Wagon, etc.
5. Should be more of a "traditional" musical. I got away with Midsummer this year and I've got a couple of things like Honk, Secret Garden in my pocket, but I kind of like the idea of alternating something new (or that the parents don't know) with something that is more of a "crowd pleaser."
To help you out, here are the shows that have been done at the school in the past... Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (my idea), Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Lil' Abner and The Wizard of Oz (all before my time... obviously).
To further help you out, here's my short list... Annie Get Your Gun (chicks with firearms...right on), Guys and Dolls, Oliver. I'm shying away from G&D for next year because we have a lot of talented freshman guys and this would be a good one their junior/senior years. Oliver is great, but there is really only one female lead and I don't really have a guy who could be burly enough for Bill Sykes. I'd also love to do A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but I doubt the "whorehouse" would get past the censors :)
So help a musically challenged girl out.
So help a girl out. A show for roughly 180 kids of all ages that I can live with for the next year.
