A/N: I couldn't leave Colin's death the way it happened in the book, there was too much left open for me. So this was written for some closure.

The coin was still warm in his hand as Colin rushed about his house getting the few things he would need before he left. Harry had come back to Hogwarts, things were finally happening - Harry was going to set everything right again.

Colin and his family had gone into hiding with the Muggle-born registration act had been put in place. He and Dennis had convinced their parents they had to hide themselves, they had to keep safe. They’d been hiding out in the northern part of the country - every bit of the spells and charms they’d learned in their years at Hogwarts and in the DA coming into play to protect their little family.

But tonight, when his galleon had begun to heat up against his thigh, Colin knew he had to go back. He couldn’t stay in hiding for the final battle; he’d never be able to face his friends again, to face Harry Potter, if he’d just hidden like a coward. And so he was rushing about his room, for a jacket and his wand and … well that was all he really needed wasn’t it? He could come back for the rest later.

“You’re not going are you?” Dennis was standing at the doorway to his bedroom, his arms crossed as he leaned against the door frame.

He would have gotten the message too; Colin was pacing back and forth, working up the courage to meet his friends again. He started when he heard his brother’s voice. “I have to go.” He said simply, looking at his brother.

“Well I’m going too then,” Dennis stood again ready to head to his own room and get what little he would need as well.

“No! Dennis wait-” Colin called out to his brother, who appeared at his doorway again. “You can’t go, you have to stay here. Protect mum and dad.” Colin hoped his brother would understand. They both had a job to do now. Colin would go back and fight and Dennis would protect their family.

“But -” Colin stopped Dennis with a look. “Yeah fine, just don’t go getting yourself killed, you big prat.”

Colin laughed, and clapped his brother on the shoulder. “Don’t worry I’ll be back soon, you, don’t let mum worry too much alright?”

Dennis nodded, but before he left he flung himself at his brother wrapping his arms around his shoulders hugging him tightly. “Be careful, ok?” Colin simply nodded, patting his brother’s back again.

“I should go,” He sighed, the coin starting to cool in his hand, he didn’t want to miss everything because he’d hung back for too long. Dennis nodded and left his room.

Colin had been practicing apparition in his time away from Hogwarts, it had been a bit tricky with the traces still on him, but he’d managed. And now as he stood in his room, Colin focused with all his might on the Hogs Head pub - the place he’d first decided he would make a stand against Voldemort, the place his training had started, where - for the first time - he’d known he would have to fight when the time came.

He had slipped into that suffocating darkness for only a moment before he found himself standing in the center of the pub. Aberforth glaring was at him “Another one coming through, eh?”

Colin nodded slowly, and Aberforth jerked his head towards the stairs. “Just climb on through.” He said gruffly. Colin rushed up the stairs and clambered through the portrait hole and down the long corridor and soon found himself in a familiar room - though it looked much different since the last time he’d seen it.

Soon he was running as quickly as he could, through familiar halls and corridors towards the large din coming from the Great Hall. Inside all the students were gathered together, each house sitting at their tables; Colin had missed Hogwarts that year more than he could say. Professor McGonagall was inside addressing the students, telling them that Voldemort was descending upon the castle that those who were of age could stay and fight, and the other students would be moved to safety.

Colin knew he wasn’t of age, but he was going to stay and fight anyway. He had been gone from this place for far too long, to simply turn around now. He had found himself a seat at the Gryffindor table, several of his old friends smiling and cheering at his return.

“Absolutely no, Creevey, go! And you, Peakes!” Colin started when McGonagall had called him out, and he’d started to protest but quickly shut his mouth at the look he received from his former head of house.

He began to file out of the Great Hall with all the other underage students, but quickly pulled away from the group and hung back so he could remain and fight. He knew he was breaking the rules, but if McGonagall wanted to punish him for it. It could wait until after the fight - he was not leaving.

Soon Colin found himself in the middle of the battle. He’d never expected it to be like this, but he ducked before he sent a stunning spell at a death eater who crumpled a few feet away from him. All in all he thought he was doing rather well, all things considered. Sure he might have gotten hit a few times, but he was holding his own.

The battle went on and on, and Colin didn’t think it would ever stop. He was running across the grass outside the school, shooting spells over his shoulder as he went, evading those being shot at him. His lungs were aching, and his muscles burning; he just wanted all of it to be over. Harry would save the day - he always did.

And that is when he stopped, there in mid-run and turned with his wand raised. The death eater who had been following him so closely stopped, and considered Colin for a moment before he raised his own wand. Colin thought briefly of Harry Potter, and smiled, bolstered by the thought that they would win. And then he thought of his parents - his mum and his dad. And then Dennis, Dennis would be at home protecting their family, just as Colin was here protecting their way of life.

And he rushed at the death eater standing in front of him, shooting of spell after spell, everything he could think of. Colin Creevey was through running. He wasn’t a coward - he was there facing his enemy the way he’d been taught. He was ready to look into his destiny, his fate, face-to-face.

He didn’t even feel the curse which hit him, just saw the flash of green light. He didn’t have time to worry about Harry, or his parents, his friends, or Dennis. Colin dropped heavily to the ground his face still hard and determined, his wand gripped tightly in his fist.
