Because I will be taking Spain from a particularly busy period, I want to mention some important events that are going on during the 16th century:

Age of Discovery: Spain gets involved in 1492 when they fund Christopher Columbus. The idea was that he would find a short cut to "the Indies" via sailing across the Atlantic. After sailing for what seems like forever, they finally land somewhere in Mexico. When he returns to Spain and it becomes obvious that that wasn't India they dub the land "the New World." Somewhere in Northern Europe, the vikings are laughing because they had discovered it centuries earlier. All of the land that Columbus discovered (and what others would discover later) would become Spanish as part of a deal. During this time, Spain becomes the first global empire and obtains a monopoly on the sea.

Habsburg Spain: In the 1400s, Queen Isabella of Spain begins to marry off her children. She ends up marrying one of her daughters to the Holy Roman Emperor which results in Spain and Austria forming a union. Spain and Austria were married in canon during this time period. This period lasts from 1506 to the 1700s and during it, Spain is in it's Golden Age.

Iberian Union: Spain marries his brother/sister Portugal and unifies the Iberian Peninsula. This lasts from 1580 to 1640 and during this time, Portugal hates Spain due to the fact Spain pretty much forced Portugal into this and screwed around with Portugals' relationship with England. When this ends in 1640, Portugal celebrates (and still does to this day) and the two stay on poor terms.

Spanish Empire: This starts in 1402 when Spain claims the Canary Islands and it just keeps growing until the 1800s. Spain becomes the first global empire, gets the ego to go along with it, makes a few enemies, and stuff happens. During this time, Spain is one of the strongest empires in the world and has everything he needs! But he still wants more, despite the fact he's claimed like, half the world and already wiped out entire civilizations.

Anglo-Spanish War: Fought against England from 1585-1604. The two started off as good friends but shit hit the fan when Henry VII decided he wanted to divorce his Spanish Queen and start a new church of his own to make sure he could always get his way. Things seemingly improved during Queen Mary's reign but it was one sided and England resented Spain during it. Things hit rock bottom when Queen Elizabeth came to power, rejected a Spanish marriage proposal, and sunk all of Spain's battleships. This war will mark the beginning of the end of the Spanish Empire due to the fact he never quite recovers from declaring bankruptcy 3 times and losing his military power. Way to rain on Spain's parade, England. I want to note that I'm playing Spain as if he was thrown off of his ship on that fateful night on August 22, 1588. Spain will not get along with England. At all.

And lastly, the Eighty Years War: 1568-1609. The Netherlands goes through a rebellious phase where he decides to stop going to Mass and not stay in his room like a good, Spanish territory (even though the Netherlands wasn't reeeeeaally a Spanish territory, yeah it's complicated). This war is fought at the same time as the Anglo-Spanish War. England helps out the Netherlands. Fighting these wars results in Spain going bankrupt, being unable to pay his soldiers, and having a very demoralized army. Spain loses the Netherlands but manages to hold onto Belgium for awhile longer.

Affiliation: He'll be a trainer and he's going to be unbeatable.

Personality: As a country of eternal sunshine and good spirit, Spain is a warm hearted and cheerful character. Despite his character, it is suggested that he has two "sides" to him. In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, he is the most powerful empire in the world and has the confidence and ego to go along with it. He hates England for past and current actions. Even in 2010, Spain still holds a grudge against the island nation and that was after the wounds had healed. Spain is a devout Catholic and values his faith. He believes that his Faith is the only one and that everyone should be Catholic.

He is unable to read situations but has proven on more than one occasion that he isn’t completely oblivious to all that goes on around him. He's so bad at reading the situation that he doesn’t even try most of the time. Antonio has been known to become a miserable character when circumstances are against him but he has always been affectionate towards Romano (South Italy) whom he has raised the last century. He is also in a union with Austria via the Habsburgs. Despite being in a relationship, Spain still wants to marry Romano and his brother, Veneziano (North Italy). His ultimate dream is to live happily with his loved ones.

Antonio is the nation of passion and it works both ways. In one sense, he is incredibly loving, caring greatly for his loved ones and willing to go to great ends to show it; at other times, he comes off as a stubborn idiot because he thinks with his heart and not his mind. For the record, he doesn't think he's an idiot-- he's simply burning with passion through and through.

He is an obedient nation that listens to his "bosses" even if he doesn't want to. In this time period, his bosses would be Austria and the Holy See. He also refers to himself as "boss Spain" which means he thinks highly of himself.

In the strips, he has been portrayed with a (pet?) bull and has a strange affinity for turtles. He is also fond of (cute) children and things. Spain claims to like sweets but in actuality, they aren't very sweet. He's an easy guy to get along with and is hopelessly optimistic-- as long as the sun shines there is hope! His nickname is the Kingdom of Passion.

During this time period, he does not get along with England, the Netherlands, or Turkey (Ottoman Empire) due to the fact that he is fighting wars with them. He is also shown to have an undesirable relationship with France.

His favorite food is the newly discovered tomato and his hobbies include taking naps and playing guitar.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Being not just any empire but the ~strongest empire in the world~ he has battle experience and is quite skilled with the halberd. He is also practiced in the way of the sword (thank you, Francis). He's not so bad at using a rifle either but, maybe he's old school, but he prefers his close combat. Do not under estimate him in battle because of his cheerful and foolish behavior-- he is ruthless, stubborn, and passionate for his cause in battle.

He is very passionate and loving and this ends up being his greatest strength and weakness. In one sense, nothing can stop him from doing anything for his loved ones and he'll go to great ends to prove it! On the other, he tends to run into things recklessly without completely thinking out all of the consequences. He never thinks things through all the way (if he did, he would have checked the weather before launching his armada. . . ).

While there are those who will deny it, Spain will be ranked as one of the best lovers in the world. It makes sense given the fact that he is commonly referred to as the Kingdom of Passion. He's an easy guy to get along with and is hopelessly optimistic-- as long as the sun shines there is hope!

He's dense and can't read situations. This often leads him to not catching hints (oh, the surprise birthday was a SURPRISE?!) and sometimes saying hurtful things without realizing. When he does realize, he dislikes it when people are angry with him. Love is very important to him and if he doesn't have it, he becomes, at best, sad.

In the late 1500s, Spain's economy is pitiful. Spain has just become the first nation to declare bankruptcy and he's so poor, he can't even afford to pay his own soldiers (which is bad considering he's fighting at least two major wars!). Given his economy, this means Spain should have a cold or something in Hetalia terms. While Spain's economy is poor and this means he should be sick, he's still in his prime so I normally interpret this as Spain taking more and longer naps during the day.

He's also a very good swimmer, hurr hurr.
