My next door neighbor trips her smoke detectors at least once a week. I swear she can't boil water without burning it, so when I heard the familiar beep beep for about ten minutes I didn't think anything of it.
Buuuuuuuuuuuut, when I looked out and saw that her car wasn't there, I tried knocking on her door and didn't get an answer. Then I faintly smelled smoke. Looking at it objectively, I figured there was a fair chance that I could be imagining it. I decided to call my apartment complex's emergency maintenance line instead of 911 so as to avoid embarrassing myself or my neighbor.
It took the maintenance dude about half an hour to get here. He opened the door and smoke billowed out. Apparently my dear dwelling-sharer forgot to turn off the oven (with garlic toast in it) when she left the house. The fire department just left.
If I didn't have cause to break this lease before, I sure as hell do now. I wanted to move closer to work anyhow, but this seals it.
