I've celebrated another birthday!

Dec 12, 2018 02:23

I just turned 71, and here's the birthday cake I made for myself. It's in the shape of a five-pointed star, and it's covered with purple edible glitter, adorned with little star-shaped silver candies and purple lightning bolts (pre-made candy painted with purple edible metallic paint). There are seven small silver candles for 70 years, and a large ( Read more... )

Thank you, and I did enjoy my birthday, and there's still some cake left - maybe I'll go snack on a small slice ;-)

I enjoy baking and decorating cakes. My son and I are just having an email conversation about a cake for his wife, whose birthday is in March. She loves sunflowers, and I even bought a pan that makes a cake in the shape of a sunflower to make her birthday cakes in, but I mentioned that the edible glitter looks almost like velvet, and I'd like to make a red velvet cake and cover it with red glitter. He mentioned that his wife likes red velvet cake. Then I found a picture online of a breed of sunflowers with dark red petals and a brown center - I could do that with red glitter and chocolate sprinkles ;-)
So now we're plotting to get together on my daughter-in-law's birthday, so I can make that cake. (Of course, if/when I do, I'll post a photo on my LJ/DW.)

Yes, it was! I just ate the last little bit of it last night. It was delicious - any cake I make for any reason has to taste as wonderful as possible, and this one re-created my favorite flavor combination from childhood. And I discovered what decorating effects I could get with edible glitter, which is a little bit new to me - I'm always interested in learning new techniques. So 71 turned out to be a great birthday for me :-)

One of my fun things to do this season has been coming up with good SF-looking seasonal beverages. So far my favorite one has been a spicy thing you can add to coffee, tea or hot cider to make *everything* more interesting. I've been calling it Solar Flare, and if you make it you will see why ( ... )
