Saw this episode when it first aired and really enjoyed it. Nice pacing. Is the room where Sam and Dean take Charlie the first of the crazy motel rooms?
Ah, this episode is the one I always remember for the strange camera effect on the backgrounds in some of the outdoors scenes - very bad. However, the scene in the Impala in there rain where they hatch plan to catch Mary is beautiful - great lighting to simulate passing cars.
Sam, Sam, Sam: Sam pushing cell phone antenna in with teeth - very cute. Sam picks the lock on the store - I love this little detail of skills he retained from his hunting days and that he usually seems to be the designated lock-picker from here on out. Sam's evil reflection in the mirror appears to have been taking eyeliner tips from Pete Wentz. Sam's evil voice sounds really stupid. Jared's performance as evil really improved by season two.
I know the fact that Dean's eyes bleed too is still perplexing/frustrating to some fans, but I'm okay without an explanation. First, Bloody Mary has crawled out of her original mirror at that point, which I think could be a game changer. More importantly, I find it extremely plausible that Dean holds himself responsible for one or more deaths on hunts gone wrong.
At the end, when they drop off Charlie, Dean looks beautiful in the front seat and I love his little eye twitch when Sam says he'd die for him. Oh hai, Rolling Stones! I enjoyed the Stones song at the end there, and when I looked it up, I saw it was a 2005 recording. I never dug much Stones oeuvre later than 1980 or so, so was surprised to hear something that simple.
And here in episode 5, we already have Sam's dork destiny. The scene where he sees Jess on the street is totally nonsensical but also moving.
Interesting to note that although Bloody Mary is a murder victim, the boys don't care much about her back-story or bringing closure to her ghost or any of that touchy-feely crap. They just want to eliminate the threat. Take that “monsters are people too” season four.
