I had a conversation with my wife the other day about Twilight. I suggested that what really needed to be written was a story about how Joseph Smith receives a bunch of golden plates from a vampire. A Nosferatu style vampire. I think such a story would be awesome.

Apparently the is a new series of Red Dwarf. Why havn't I heard of this before?

Went to Swancon on Sunday, which given I was only there for half a day, I had a good time. Said Hi to a lot of peopled, talked to some others. Actually went to at least two program Items. Had dinner with Robert Shearman (*waves*) and drank some beer. Only regret was that I didn't introduce myself to an author that I kind of wanted to. Oh well next

So last night after watching the Maravian Swearing Chef, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. I thought, I've heard good things lets watch some of this. Ten minutes later I turn to Jen and say, "Fuck this dialogue is dire". It made the Govinator look animated and nuanced. So we put on some Firefly instead to wash the taste out of our brains.

Prompted by people pondering what's going to happen to the Neuromancer and Dark is Rising movies and partly by coming across it the other day. Who thinks that Metal Fatigue by ladnews would make a great Bruce Willis action vehicle?

It seems that renowned novelist David Eddings has been incredibly stupid.

In other news China Mieville has a new book out this year, which acording to amazon is classed as young adult. That should be interesting.

So I've been thinking a little about SF recently, and the dominant themes in the SF that I read. And at the moment it seems that posthuman-ism[1] is the new black, as it were. Or rather has been for a while. Gone are the apocalytic and post-apocalyptic novels that sprang out of the shadows of nuclear armageddon. Now we are much, much more ( Read more... )

Last thursday I bought myself a couple of books , one was Accelerando by Charles Stross the other was Origin of the Speccies by Nathan Jarvis. One is a Hugo nominated SF book the other is a book about FootyI was slightly concerned that carrrying a football book and a SF novel in the same bag might produce some kind of tear in space-time ( Read more... )

The Hugo nominations are out.

The interesting news is of course that John Scalzi has had his book Old Mans War nominated for best novel. Remarkable also in that he has also been nominated for the John W. Campbell award as well, the first Author to do so since R.A. MacAvoy in 1984 ( Tea with the Black Dragon ).
