I was madly in love with (and still am) Firefly. I was looking for the possibility of unfilmed episodes that Whedon might have let leak. I found none, but I stumbled across the idea of fanfic.

HOLY CRAP. (I still have a few Firefly fanfics saved, one of which is an angsty River/Simon, so I know I've always had a 'cest thing.)

Then, being as I was into Buffy, I should go looking for that.
NOM. This is where I discovered the Buffy/Giles teacher/student thing. :)

Then (I think it might have been just after I had seen the first HP movie) I found Harry. I dove in without desires, tasting first Harry/Hermione, then Harry/Draco, then Fred/George (OH DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN). After a small while watching those two play, I stumbled across a Harry/Snape.

Ah, then I was doomed. I adore Fred/George, and they will always be my first love, but my everlasting love will always be Severus/Harry followed closely by Severus and whoeverhebloodywellwantstofuck. :)

For some reason Fred/George is the only incest I can read. Also, if it's them and someone else (Harry, Hermione, Snape - I don't care) then those are the only threesome fics I can read. Snarry is my OTP, but Fred and George are so hot they make me read things I normally avoid like the plague. *shrug*

Interesting. I never really thought I'd enjoy incest considering the fandoms I've been involved with. Though Weasley-cest and Malfoy-cest seems to be fine for me. And Snarry Severitus. And Sam/Dean.

Apparently it's not quite the taboo it once was. *cough*

I'm not a huge fan of the Malfoys in general, so Malfoy-cest is not something I read all that much. And I don't know why the idea of Fred/George is so hot to me, because even though incest is obviously not taboo for some of us *coughAcciocough*, it's still a pretty automatic 'do not want' for me. But the twins...yum.

Anon7, who is flexing her newly aquired userpic muscles. *smooches*

You know, I can't even remember finding fanfiction for the first time. I have memories of browsing Fanfiction.net in 2000 or 2001 but I don't remember how I found it. I can remember reading His Dark Materials and Tamora Pierce fic since those were my favorite books at the time. I was reading HP (we were up to PoA at that point) but I didn't look for any fic about it. I read fanfiction in other fandoms off and on for the next couple of years (my first slash pairing was Zoisite/Kunzite from Sailor Moon, which is a canon ship) and when OotP came out, it re-started my interest in HP, so I looked up fic for that since that was only natural. The first piece of HP fanfiction I read was Remus/Sirius on FF.net, because I liked the idea of them together. I don't remember anything about it, though I wish I had saved it ( ... )

Oh! When I got to "The Prisoner of Azkaban", and there was all the cattiness and stifled emotion between Snape and Remus (in front of the kids, anyway), and all that delicious backstory came out, I was in heaven! The marauder generation was where it was at! HP had me forever after that. And it only got better (Sirius and Severus pointing wands at each other in the kitchen with only Harry keeping them apart? YUM).
Naturally, since those men were the best part of the universe, JK had to KILL them all. Good luck with your dead shipmates, people! At least the Drarry fans only have to deal with nextgen kids and ostensibly straight husbands....

Jo really did wipe out that whole generation, didn't she?

Interesting. But I find the Marauders dull as dishwater. Too much testosterone and posturing for me.

Remus is so stressed from Sirius's death that he needs to sleep with a teenager apparently.

*Nods* Yes, this form of healing is common in the HP fandom.

I had always been making up fanfiction stories in my head as a kid so I'm just thrilled that I found people out there like me!

Me, too. The problem I have though is that I only "write" the dramatic scenes. I can't be bothered with the actually work of writing, so even when I am willing to put something down on paper, it has to be very short before I become frustrated and lose interest.

I liked that there was someone writing almost anything

Hm. I'm not sure if it's fandom that has changed or perhaps the people on my flist. But before it seemed that if someone was writing a 'rare pair' it was always really uber popular character/someone minor. Like Snape/Slughorn or Harry/Umbridge. Now though, there seem to be so many pairings featuring two minorish characters - Neville/Bill, Percy/Oliver, Luna/Ginny. Not a problem, really, just different.

my first slash pairing was Zoisite ( ... )

As much as I forget it usually, my first fandom was Sailor Moon. Round about the beginning of the Millennium (and yes, I just like saying that, even if it was only about 9 years ago), I was finally able to access the interwebs for long periods of time. I had been online before, of course, and had even hung out in some of the earlier AOL chat rooms, but it wasn't until 2000 that I was actually drawn in. My friend had written some Sailor Moon fiction, and posted it on FFN, so I went on to check it out. And then check out what others had written. And then, hey, I still have time, what else have people written about that I recognize. And look! It's Harry Potter!

I started reading pretty much whatever, and actually an amazing number of Hermione/Snape fics. It wasn't until a few months later that I worked up the nerve to look at a slash story. Being me, it wasn't just a slash story, oh no. It was a NC-17 slash story. I felt so daring, hitting that little button and lying that I was old enough to read this story. I don't even ( ... )

I saw your icon some months back and texted it to some of my friends. I live in rainy Portland, OR, so every time I see a rainbow I text everybody. I get much laughter in return: "God's havin' buttsecks!"
It is eternally amusing. Thank you for that.

Portland, really? I live in Eugene! And you're quite welcome; I made the icon out of a picture of the shirt, originally by t-shirt hell, but which seems to be sadly discontinued.

Awesome! I have oft lamented the lack of HP fen in the Portland(ish) area. Perhaps I'm simply on the wrong message boards. :)

I never really knew fan fiction existed till I started getting on HP discussion boards. This was after I read the HBP. Some people would talk about fan fiction, and link once in a while, so I would take a peek, but nothing I read really interested me. What I can recall was reading about the marauders or the twins in some kind of boring situation that was suppose to be funny ( ... )

There were a lot of Snape bashing fics, which just got my blood boiling.

I think one of the reasons I never got on well with any of the "official" HP sites is because they seem to have a canon/pro-Gryffindor slant that just doesn't appeal to me. And Snape bashing will send me to the back button faster than anything else. I wouldn't say I'm a Snape apologist, though I'm willing to overlook behavior in him that I wouldn't in any other characters (Hm. Perhaps that's actually the definition of a Snape apologist. Meh. Don't care). I just think Snape is the most interesting character. And things that focus on the Trio, the Marauders, the Weasleys - don't interest me. So for the others there is canon, for me there is fan fic. I don't pee on their Cheerios, they don't pee on mine. Simple.

especially for some TV shows that never ended properly.

Agreed. Fan fic is wonderful for fixing canon.

I’ve also just caught up with Merlin*perks up* Yes, Merlin fandom is eating my brain right now. I keep expecting to become bored with it ( ... )

Since I was new to fandom I thought that was the only place I could go, but with HP I learned a lot about fandom in general. And I know now to tread carefully on these “official” places, some people seem to be seeking “the truth” like it is a religion, and if that turns them on fine, but I personally want to have fun, and I don’t find arguing fun. Especially for a fictional world.

Don't care). My definition of a Snape apologist is trying to have someone see Snape the way you do, and frankly I don’t care how others see him, just let me interpret him the way I want to. I’m going to do it anyway, and no two people are going to see him the same way. This is a fictional world ( ... )

OMG, YES!! The crazy is rampant among some of those people. I mean, I *love* to discuss things and I have been known to look a few things up to prove a point. But it's not like my honor is at stake if I'm *gasp* wrong.

There was one site that *banned* me because my user name encouraged shipping and they were a gen site. Um, k.

I think that some people think that calling something canon gives it more meaning,

Yes, YES, YES!!! I can't believe how many people think "canon compliant" is code for "the good stuff". Like AU/AR fics are inherently inferior. I don't understand it at all. And it's such a prevalent idea that fan-fic had to create their own genre (EWE) so they could still use the "quality label" of canon compliant without actually being canon compliant. *facepalms*

But I really do like this re-telling of the Arthurian legend.I'm having a bit of a Merlin crisis atm. ;D The one thing I don't like about the actual Arthurian legends is how hurtful they are ( ... )

It seems ridiculous now, but I had absolutely no idea that there was such a thing as fan fic before 2002, and this is coming from a person who actually wrote what was probably a 50,000 word fan fic featuring the two guys from Wham! in 1984 or 1985. I just didn't know that is what I had written.

In 2002 I was completely enamored with Harry Potter, more specifically, Alan Rickman. I joined a Yahoo group and there, in the files section, was a folder filled with fan fic. I clicked on it and found a Severus/Remus fan fic, read it, and thought... er okay? It wasn't exactly my cuppa, but I did find what was: After reading a few very bad gen fics that were little more than rewrites of the original text, I found the wonderful world of Severus/Hermione. I devoured everything for six months, then I moved to Severus as Harry's father fics, then to Severus mentors Harry fics, then finally I discovered the wonderful world of Snarry and haven't looked back.

I think that's true for a lot of people. I wrote a ton of fan fic in my head (I couldn't imagine writing it on paper - what if someone found it?). Though I was always a lazy writer and skipped the boring scenes filled with such expendable things as plot and character development and just focused on the dramatic scenes. ;D

Strangely enough even though I am pretty exclusively a slash fan, early on in HP I tried to read some Snape/Hermione fics. The trouble is that I have a very short attention span and all the Snape/Hermione fics were 173849673950938475 chapters long. I think they refer to 10K word fics as "drabbles" in that pairing. That's never something that will work for someone like me who is easily distracted by shiny things. Fortunately for me, brilliant Snarry comes in all lengths. ;D
