The cart bumped up and down as it jerked down the rocky dirt path. Jun was seated in a corner admiring his sword while Aiba lazily laid asleep sprawled out in his seat. They were headed to start their dreaded task of recruiting new “volunteers”.
As they were nearing the first house Jun nudged his sleeping friend awake and returned his weapon to it's sheath. Aiba cast a weary glance at the road before moving to sit. One quick look around showed that they were around what could be called, “the middle of nowhere”.
“Who would live out here?”
Jun shrugged in reply, “I guess anyone could, so long as they didn't have much.” He let out a sigh as they came to a stop.
They both climbed out and headed towards the house. Aiba nervously bit his bottom lip as he stared at the ground. Jun noticed and put his arm over Aiba's shoulders in a comforting gesture.
“You worry too much, what if no one even lives here?”
Aiba perked up at the words and looked at Jun. “You think so?” he said in a hopeful tone.
“Even if no one is there, we still need to return with a certain amount of people. Let's just hope that this goes quickly.” Jun removed his arm from Aiba and stopped in the doorway. Hesitantly, he reached out and knocked on the door.
The door opened to reveal a Japanese man that looked to be around the same age and height of Jun. His brown hair was swept across his face and lighter where the light was hitting it. The shape was his lips was somewhere in between a smile and a frown. He nodded to Aiba and Jun before speaking. “What do you want?” he asked with a hint of irritation in his voice.
Deeply inhaling, Aiba took out a paper and quickly began to read. “By the order of the Prince you are to come to the castle...by doing so-”
Toma cut him short. “Sure.” He stepped completely outside and closed the door behind him. “I have nothing here, so I'll gladly accept.”
With a curt nod Jun motioned for Toma to head towards cart and grabbed a silenced Aiba and began walking.
“I had a full speech prepared...” Aiba pouted.
Jun patted him on the back, secretly glad Toma had cut in. “I know, I know...”

Nino bolted upright as he woke from his nightmare. He looked around the room and sighed with relief as he realized it was just a dream. His comfort was quickly replaced with confusion as he tried to remember how he got back to his room.
“Oh! Sho-” he suddenly through of, before remembering the dispute they had last night. Nino got up and headed to the wash room. Sleepily looking in the mirror, he noticed tear streaks on his face and quickly splashed them with water to erase them.
As he headed back out and into the kitchen, he noticed a note on the table.
Nino,
I'll be out late tonight, don't wait up for me.
I'm sorry.
~Sho
Nino put the note down and frowned at its bluntness. All he could say was sorry? Not even a simple though as to what he might have been feeling for the last years. In a sudden anger, he tore the note in half and cursed.
~~~
Prince Satoshi sat atop his thrown, rubbing his temples to try to rid himself of a headache. The guard recruiters were due to return any moment now, sure to bring more problems. As if on cue, a servant came in to announce the arrival of Jun and Aiba.
“Captain Matsumoto and his guard have returned Sire.” The man bowed low to show respect.
Ohno waved him out. “Just hurry and send them in.” Impatience filled his voice.
Jun walked in first, followed by Aiba; Toma and the others they had picked up afterward had remained outside. He knelt in respect and the others all followed suit. Jun rose to speak when indicated.
“Prince, we have brought many men, only one short of five-hundred.” Which was his best guess, he had stopped after fifty and thought that somewhere around five-hundred would be impressive and Aiba was unsure as to whether he had counted someone twice or skipped a few people, coming up to five-hundred thirteen. Besides, he knew no one was going to bother to count them when he returned.
Ohno simply nodded before talking. “One short? Go find one more then.”
Aiba frowned and looked to Jun, who at the moment had a look of pure irritation.
“But, what's wrong with that many?! You should be grateful-” Jun began to rant.
“Yes sire! We will go right now!” Aiba quickly cut in and pulled Jun out the door before he began digging his own grave anymore. Once outside, Jun began to talk again.
“Gah! I just can't stand him.” he began. “How can he be so heartless?! I work, he sits there all day, I go out in the burning sun, he stays inside all day! I bet that he is both without tears and blood! And another thing...”
Aiba giggled at Jun's antics and pulled Jun to walk with him. By this time the sun was setting, and the hottest part of the day gone. The only area they had yet to visit was the outer part of the Kingdom, where most of the miners and smiths lived. Also, the poorest. The chances of finding someone on the first try was high, even if they were unwilling.
After walking for sometime, they came across a narrow path that turned into a more secluded area. “Oh!” Aiba exclaimed. “I almost missed this.”
Jun grumpily turned onto the path with Aiba and continued walking until a single house came into sight. A single light was on in the front room, showing a silhouette of a person as they moved around. Aiba picked up the pace a little and hurried to the house. “Common Jun, this is the last one!”
Smiling a little, Jun hurried to catch up.
~~~
Nino lit a candle as he moved into the kitchen. He glanced out the window, still hoping Sho was kidding and would come home at the usual time. Feeling a little sad, he began to prepare a meal for himself. Just as he was about to get out a plate, a knock at the door interrupted him. He quickly rushed over to the door and pulled it open, expecting Sho to be there.
Aiba was surprised at the doors sudden opening and jumped a little, while Jun who had little patience left grabbed Nino by the wrist and pulled him outside. “By orders you are to come to the castle to be a servant. Lets go-”
“Nani?!” Nino exclaimed and pulled out of Jun's grasp. “B-but, I'm waiting for someone to come back...Sho-” He tried to explain that he was waiting for Sho to get home, then suddenly though of the fight, and the note. Sho doesn't care... He thought sourly to himself before feeling a sudden wave of sorrow. “Can I leave a note-”
“Yes, I'll leave one. Aiba start walking with him.” Jun cut in and walked into the house, leaving a paper on the table.
Aiba took a hold of Nino's hand and began pulling him away from the house, the sudden motion surprising the latter. Aiba gave him a sweet smile. “You're cute~” he said as if Nino weren't a person at all, but rather a puppy.
Nino looked over at Aiba, tears forming in his eyes as he walked farther from the house. Aiba opened his mouth to speak again, but Jun spoke first.
“Aiba, you're going to scare him.”
~~~
Sho walked through the door, calling Nino's name as usual.
But it was just an echo in an empty house now.
