In the Shadow of No Towers by Art Spiegelman

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was at the Depdiknas Library with my sister, rummaging aimlessly, when I extended my hand to a shelf next to me where they put some of the oversizes, pulled back my hand, and to my astonishment found that they had Art Spiegelman’s In The Shadow of No Towers. It was a treasure. It was an eye-opener.

Selfish Cunt’s I Love New York it ain’t, but it shocked my heart just the same, with its frankness and irony at the same time. Art described his experience as a New Yorker during and after the 9/11. He was a firsthand eyewitness, with his daughter going to school next to one of the Towers. He’s a Jew that had to face accusation of people that Jews were all behind the tragic incident. He’s an American that had to face the big question: Why should we attack Iraq? Why, for gossake, in the name of national security and oil? There will be blood; there has been blood, too much, too much.

(It was such a coincidence that earlier this morning, I read how the Latin American countries are united to back up Evo Morales in his fight against the American-sponsored agitation; and a couple of days ago, I read Motohiro Katou’s Rocketman that blatantly showed how the American-sponsored war against drugs in Colombia was not really about drugs - it’s about oil, oil, oil.)

And the book returned my faith to the art called comic. True, comic has its boundaries - but what kind of artists are we if we don’t dare travel to those unexplored borders? Thank you Art. You’re such a Gift.
