i've often felt a disconnect with my generation, but i don't feel like i'm from a different era - i wasn't born 50 or 150 years too late - i feel like i missed my generation by three to five years (this might explain getting married to someone three years older than me). i have never felt like my interest set matched my direct contemporaries, but when i was in high school, i felt like i was just a tiny bit too young to be interested in the things that i was interested in.
i also have always felt like a stranger to my generation. it seems like there is this little pocket of people, too young for gen-x, too old for whatever is next, the myspace gen or something dreadful like that. and none of those other things, gen-y or whatever make sense either. and even barring broad social distinctions, i for the most part don't understand what people my own age are doing or why.
and the wrong time period thing is weird, because it's not like i can pinpoint a time i would rather be in. i think actually it is an aesthetic longing only, because i definitely don't long for previous times with regards to social ideology (especially where the position of women is concerned) or less technologically advanced times, even if techiness is one thing that makes me feel isolated from my present time.
