Except, it seemed, being handed command of a city under constant attack in another galaxy.
“You keep this up and we’ll have enough confetti to throw you a dozen farewell parties,” Jack said once she had secured her weapon and removed her safety gear. She turned and smiled at him. “Ya know you’re missing out on your cake, right?”
Her smile turned into a full grin, “You mean the one Teal’c and Vala made for me?”
“Hell no, that one turned poor Siler green. Daniel bought from the little German bakery around the corner. Chocolate with raspberry filling.”
“My favorite,” said Sam as she turned to leave the range.
Jack reached out and gently reached out to grab her wrist. Sam looked at his hand on her arm and then looked back up at him. There was confusion in her eyes, plus that little something extra - consistent, yet indefinable. She then looked behind him and noticed the package with the big blue bow on it.
“Sir, you went shopping?”
“Yep, I figured you need something to go with these,” he replied, rubbing his finger lightly across the wings of her new rank. She stared warily at the package, as if she was expecting something to jump out and bite her.
“Did one of the guys go with you? Or Cassie?”
“Nope, did it all by myself,” he said. Sam took a step back. “Oh, fer…here, just opened it. If you hate it, Vala picked it out.”
She smiled and ripped into it before removing the top of the box. A long silence followed and Jack began to wonder if he had kept the receipt anywhere. Sam looked back at up and asked, “Is it real?”
“Yep, works and everything. I tried it out first,” he said, an experience that had made him glad to have the two stars on his shoulders. Sam looked back into the box and then back up at him again. It was getting irritating.
“I love it,” she said as she reached up to brush her lips across his cheek.
She took her present out of the box, which Jack picked up, and they both walked out of the firing range and towards her party.
“It’s kind of a like two edged sword. If I miss, I can just make them laugh themselves to death,” Sam joked as she held her Hello Kitty gun.
“You never miss, Carter.”
“Not sure a pink gun is going to win me a lot of respect on Atlantis.”
Jack shrugged his shoulders before saying, “If they laugh at you, shoot ‘em.”
Sam let out a chuckle and asked, “Is that your only advice for taking command?”
Jack stopped in the middle of the hallway, turned to Sam, and placed his hands on her shoulder. He held her gaze before pulling her in for a hug. “Just one more - don’t die on me out there, Carter.”
**AN - In no way do I advocate a gun with cartoon characters on it - but I couldn’t resist. ;)

You know, I just bet that, once the team got past a certain comfort point, Sam recieved a lot of presents like this over the years - but that's just perfect. Hee, I liked Sam's reaction to Jack shopping all by himself - and they're very sweet together. Aww.
