*Probably not at all what you wanted and you might hate it but this is what came out when I saw your prompt…*

“So, you and Mark Sloan?” Meredith asks.

It’s the day after the now infamous fight and they have run in to one another in the clinic. Meredith would be lying to herself if she said that she wasn’t trying to avoid this.

Lexie smiles in that almost breathless way she does and nods. “Yes.”

Meredith stares at her, wondering why she would ever be happy about that. It is Mark Sloan they are talking about. Man whore. Lexie has to know about his reputation. The patients probably even know.

Despite the frown Meredith can feel pulling down on her face, Lexie continues smiling, hugging a stack of charts to her chest. She looks happy and Meredith has no idea why. Derek and Mark got into a brawl in the middle of the hospital the day before and now, Derek is at home in bed, refusing to get up. There is nothing happy about this situation in Meredith’s opinion.

“Well be careful,” she advises though she has no idea why.

She only cared about this situation when she thought Lexie was cutting herself. Now that everyone knows about the underground Intern Fight Club, Meredith has gone back to being completely indifferent when it comes to matters concerning Lexie.

Lexie’s smile drops a fraction of an inch. “Why?”

Meredith stares at her, knowing that Lexie cannot truly be this stupid or blind. “Because he’s Mark Sloan,” she provides as if that is all the explanation that’s needed. Lexie still doesn’t seem to get it and Meredith sighs almost impatiently. “He has a certain reputation…”

“Oh. That.” Lexie then shrugs. “None of that matters. He’s different with me.”

Meredith blinks at her. She wonders how many women before Lexie has naively said the exact same thing about Mark Sloan. She wonders how many women have looked at the man and thought that they could be the one to change him.

“Is he now?” Meredith asks, not believing her for a second and Lexie picks up on it.

Lexie’s smile disappeared completely now. “Yes,” she answers. “You don’t know him, Meredith. No one really does.”

Meredith feels a headache coming on and she rubs her fingers across her forehead. She knows that she should just walk away before she and Lexie get into some juvenile fight in the middle of the hospital about their boyfriends and it isn’t as if enough people aren’t talking about the four of them already.

“Just be careful,” Meredith says again, still having no idea why she was continuing to stand there and give warnings that could almost be confused as sisterly concern.

It isn’t as if she cares that Mark and Lexie are seeing one another. It’s just that over the past few months of Lexie being there, Meredith can’t help but notice how much alike Lexie and Derek are. Both are romantics. Both believe in love and the power it can have. They aren’t dark or twisty or have such messed-up emotional problems, they can barely function as human beings.

Mark and Meredith on the other hand… they are the same person, just in a female and male form.

And Meredith already knows how this is going to end between Mark and Lexie because even though she knows she loves Derek, she is terrified of how it is going to end because with her, it will end one day and with her, it will be her fault.

She doesn’t want to hurt Derek and since Lexie is just like him, Meredith realizes that she doesn’t want Lexie get hurt either by her male counterpart.

“Lexie,” Meredith sighed, still rubbing her forehead. “I don’t think you and Mark together is a very good idea.”

But Lexie isn’t listening anymore. Instead, she is looking over her shoulder at something behind Meredith and her bright and shiny mega-watt smile is plastered on her face again. Meredith doesn’t have to turn around to know that she is looking at Mark and she sighs, almost in defeat.

Lexie won’t listen to her. Meredith knows this. And why should she? She hasn’t been much of an older sister and besides. It’s not like Derek is staying away from her so why should Lexie stay away from Mark?

It will end badly between all of them but in the mean time, Meredith thinks that maybe she and Mark should just keep their romantic, happy people for as long as they can.

This was a pleasant look at their particular situation post the fight. I enjoyed how you touched on Meredith's similar personality with Mark and the similarities between Derek and Lexie. Thank you for sharing!

Thank YOU for reading! I always wondered if they meant to make Lexie so much like Derek and Mark so much like Meredith. Sometimes, there are just too many similarities for it to be a coincidence. But hopefully, Derek and Meredith will get their happily-ever-after because then, that means Mark and Lexie can too.

This is exactly what I had in mind when I posted this prompt. :D Well, not EXACTLY, but I wanted a reaction about Mark. :)

Thank you!

Meredith is right, she and Mark are like the same person while Lexie and Derek are. I like how you didn't just drop Meredith's apprehension with Mark in the first place. It's something that pisses me off in the show :P.

Anyway, this is awesome. Thank you for replying to my prompt!!!

Thank god you like this. I was actually really nervous about posting this just because I have never written Meredith before and I was worried that the idea in my head wasn't coming out write on paper. Thank you so much for reading!

That part really bothers me in the show too - how all of a sudden, Meredith is just fine with Mark and she is claiming Lexie as her sister without any sort of buildup or reason for it.

Oh, this was interesting. I love the comparisons you made between their two relationships -- it's something I've often thought about myself. Great job!
