It was after everything was set up that Kairi caught sight of the figure in the distance, far enough away to avoid talking to the others yet close enough to watch over them. It was as if he didn't want anyone to know he was there just to see if she'd notice. But Kairi had been hoping to see him at the picnic, although she knew not to expect too much. Of course she wanted all of them to come, but of her friends, he was the one who always surprised her.
"Riku!" She called out brightly, too delighted to hold back her exclamation for the sake of his shyness. Kairi took just a moment to wave off her company and started towards him. Even if Riku hadn't rushed to join her, he looked almost relieved as she approached him. Her smile widened in an effort to pass it on to him. "I'm so glad you came."
She wondered briefly if he'd always been so reserved around groups. When she thought about it, they had never really spent much time throwing large parties back home. It was always just the three of them on the beach. Back then, they were all each other needed. Maybe he still felt the same way.
Yet this time, he came alone. After everything had settled, Kairi thought that things might go back to normal with all of them. But she told herself that it was still early enough, Sora and Roxas could still show up. In the meantime, Riku deserved to have some fun. "Come on," she said, suddenly more excited about pulling him into the crowd. "Are you hungry? You should see what everyone made!"
