He hadn't stopped moving even when he'd passed the same old street lamps for the seventh time, even when his eyes had lost their focus hours ago, because that broken plea for help -- for him -- still played over and over in his head, and he couldn't stop until he had fulfilled that duty. Until he had found him, until he was there at his side; until he had killed the one responsible. Soubi didn't know his name or his face, but he knew Ritsuka's, and the pain and anger that seared within him when he pictured that face along with the trembling words that still ran through his mind were enough to keep him on this blind, futile search.
And then that ever-repeating plea had been interrupted by another voice, one that still cut into him like one more shard of glass every time he heard it, and Soubi knew that Ritsuka's orders could no longer be his top priority.
He had failed.
He had failed to carry out Seimei's order to protect Ritsuka; he had failed to keep his hundred promises to Ritsuka to be there for him when no one else would, and the second hurt more than any of the countless physical pains to which he had been subjected in his life. The perfect Fighter, and he had failed them both.
Head bowed, Soubi knocked hesitantly but firmly on the unfamiliar door, flinching inwardly as the hollow sound reverberated in the doorway, too loud after so much silence.
Even after all this time, he rarely knew exactly what to expect from his former Sacrifice -- no, not his, never his; the Sacrifice to whom he had belonged -- and since Seimei's sudden return from his false death, he knew even less.
But he was certain that this time, whatever he was to receive would be deserved.
