The truth was the fear was slowly creeping up on her as well. In battle there was no time for it, no luxury of a second to be paralyzed, to be breathless, to be blank. Move, just move, fight, destroy Britannia. That's all that was needed and everything else had to be shunted aside or buried under the lavaflow of the anger that was all she needed.
But here there was no one to fight. At least not yet. Whatever this city was, something about it set her nerves humming, kept her on a knife-bright edge, gun close and warm in her hand. And she ran. She'd become so good at it over the past year, escape always a ready option without Zero's miracles to win them the day. To run, to know when, where, how, to keep them chasing if she had to, to give others time to escape. She was rarely the one who needed the time, the help. The second thing she'd learned when she'd begun her fight had been how to protect herself.
And there was a girl, young (like Nunnally yet another thought she couldn't afford, home, the memory of it and what she'd come close to regaining only to lose again. Lelouch. Zero.) and if her world had been kinder than Kallen's, she'd never have needed to learn what Kallen had. And this city, somehow less and more than it seemed, like an illusion built on a shadow. It was a presence in her head, a sound. Kallen could not leave that girl to this place. Neither to silence nor sound.
And so she ran.
